Abdul Hannan is serving as faculty in the Department of Geography, Sikkim University, Gangtok, India. He is trained in Regional Development at the Centre for the Study of Regional Development, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) during his doctoral studies programme. His research focuses on Plantation Economy, Border Studies, Cooperative Farming, and Sustainable Development. He teaches Economic Geography, Agricultural Geography, and Geographies of Development. He was awarded prestigious Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) Post-Doctoral Fellowship (2017–19), Government of India, New Delhi, and accomplished his work on Plantation Economy and Regional Development: A Shifting Paradigm. He has published several research papers in national and international journals such as Transactions, Institute of Indian Geographers (IIG) Pune; Review of Development and Change, Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), Chennai; North Eastern Geographer, North-East India Geographical Society, Guwahati; Social Change and Development, OKDISCD, Guwahati, etc.
