Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903) was a distinguished German classical scholar, historian, jurist, and politician, best known for his monumental work on the history of ancient Rome. Born in Garding, Schleswig, a province of the Kingdom of Denmark, Mommsen was raised in a family with a strong intellectual tradition. He showed an early aptitude for languages and history, which led him to study law and philology at the University of Kiel.
