Thomas Hobbes (5 April 1588 – 4 December 1679) was a seminal English philosopher, scientist, and historian, best known for his foundational work in modern political philosophy, particularly the social contract theory. His magnum opus, Leviathan (1651), argued for the necessity of an absolute sovereign to prevent the "war of all against all" inherent in the state of nature.
