Walt Whitman (Huntington, May 31, 1819 – Camden, March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist, considered by many as the "father of free verse." Paulo Leminski regarded him as the great poet of the American Revolution, just as Mayakovsky would be the great poet of the Russian Revolution. His work Leaves of Grass is considered a landmark in world literature, especially within the poetic genre. Fernando Pessoa wrote a poem titled "Salutation to Walt Whitman."
