Setting; South East Iceland, at a farm by the Vatnajökull National Park off the Þjóðvegur, (Thjothvegur); the ring road that skirts round the edge of Iceland, and Höfn a small town to the east. date: 2014
It was summer now, an Icelandic summer where temperatures only reach about 14 degrees C, but to Icelanders it was hot.
Behind the red roofed house the cliffs of Skálafell rose in jagged steps to the rock plateau. Here where she sat on the decking, the view out over the old glacial outwash fields was of green pasture; thin, but green.
In the middle distance black lava outcrops and dykes stood out in contrast.
The house shook again. Intense earthquake activity had been continuing around Bárðarbunga volcano and Vatnajökull glacier, The previous day, just passed midnight, an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit Bárðarbunga and an earthquake measuring 4.5 hit Askja caldera, the largest quake in Askja since 1992. An additional two strong earthquakes hit Bárðarbunga around 3 am.
Katja was tense. She felt she should be used to this by now. She had grown up here on the farm and experienced many tremors and eruptions. Twice the farm had been covered in a grey snow of ash.
But as she grew older the tension increased 'till last year she had had a full blown panic attack.
The local doctor in Höfn had told her mother she would grow out of it.
But Bergis, her mother, fretted, for she knew the black moods that plagued Katja, the days when she stayed in bed and didn’t go out.
Her husband partly understood. A quiet man he also had times when he felt anti-social; he retreated to farm work and machinery. The earthquakes and eruption did not seem to affect him but his wife noticed his moodiness before an eruption.
Unnur rang on the mobile.
“Coming in to Höfn tonight?”
“So you can see Einar. I know.”said Katja
“Not just for me, you might meet someone new.”
Someone new!
She had just broken up with Thorkel. Everyone thought that’s what was making her down. It was a little but not as much as they thought. She had grown bored with Thorkel and his obsessions with certain pop stars and 4x4’s. He was nice looking but shallow. Like a volcanic lake, a metre deep and gravel at the bottom.
“I said I would help mum make some bread for the guests, and I’ve got to finish this essay for the course.”
