Do you struggle with fear and anxiety?
Today most people in our society grapple with some form of fear and anxiety.
It could be fear of failure, fear of rejection, and fear that things will not turn out well. Have you ever felt this way? If the answer is yes, don't worry - you are normal.
Fear is a survival instinct that is built into every one. It's GOOD because it has kept us safe and alive up until this point in our lives. It protects us.
But this fear and anxiety is no longer a useful emotion when it takes us away from our goals and dreams. Then it becomes something to be dealt with and overcome.
To overcome anxiety and fear, you must understand that they are emotions. These are emotional patterns, similar to any other emotion you feel - anger, frustration, depression, happiness, confidence, excitement, passion, etc.
A common misconception is that these feelings are often experienced because of the outside world. That it's your job, your boss, your finances, or something beyond your control that makes you feel fear and anxiety.
This is not 100% true! While external events can create fear and anxiety, they are not responsible for your experience.
Anytime you place something outside your control and blame on it, you have no power to change it. Instead, I want to implore you to take responsibility for all the emotions you feel because you are about to learn it is you who create them.
In order to learn how to get over fear and anxiety, it's critical to understand that three things determine how you feel at any given moment of time
1. How you use your body
Your physiology, or the way you use your body, is the number one factor that determines how you feel at any given time. There is a physiological pattern associated with every emotional state. What physiology do you use during this time when you're scared and anxious?
I can almost guarantee that your breathing will be shallow, your body will be tense, your voice will be lower, won't take up much space, you will have less eye contact, and drop your shoulders. How you use your body determines how you feel.
What if you drastically change the way you use your body? What happens if you run or exercise intensely? How would you feel after a while? When you use your body intensely, you experience a completely different set of emotions and states.
Running or exercising isn't always a practical way to overcome anxiety and fear, but it does work and is an example of a change in physiology. Or what if you are just starting to breathe more fully? What would it do for your fear and your need?
Square your shoulders. Put a big smile on your face, chin up, speak a bit louder and take up more space. How do you feel now? You probably feel very different. Practice your physical reaction to specific situations. Be aware of how you are reacting and why.
Are you getting into a negative state of fear? Or are you able to steer at fear in the face and overcome it with your body movement? Practice using your physical space to instantly respond to certain situations and understand how to overcome anxiety and fear.
You will find that as you become aware and change your physical response, your thoughts and outlook will also change. Understanding how to overcome anxiety and fear begins with managing your physiology. Become aware and control your body at all times and you will gain mastery over your fears.
2. Focus
What you focus on at any given time will determine how you feel. When you focus on the things that aren't working, and the worst-case scenario, it goes without saying how you'll feel. Your concentration gives your emotions.
"You feel what you are focusing on."
In order to learn to overcome anxiety and fear, you need to control your concentration and thoughts. You need to focus on what you want, not what you fear. A person who is confident in any given situation is focusing on a completely different thing than a person who is afraid.
To learn how to overcome fear, focus only on positive thoughts. Focus on that and see how things work. Focus on the good of the situation. Create a picture of it and visualize it. Be aware of what is changing in the situation as you focus on your thoughts. You will find that your state of mind begins to change.
How does your focus change as you fix your gaze on what you want? Do you see a clear difference between a state of fear and your new picture? See how the focus and control of your thoughts transform your perspective. Often, feelings of fear and anxiety take precedence over your view. With this method, fear has a place in your head that becomes insignificant. Instead, you're working with a stronger, laser-like focus that can overcome any situation.
You will find that as soon as your focus changes, so does your decisions and outcome. It's an easy way to learn to overcome anxiety and fear. If you do this, you will feel very different about the situation.
3. Language
Your language patterns or beliefs also have an influence on how you feel. To be able to overcome your fears and anxiety, you'll have to change your beliefs and the words you speak to yourself. What are the most prevalent beliefs or phrases you use when you experience fear and anxiety?
“This isn't going to work.”
“What if I fail?”
“I don't think I'm good enough.”
“Maybe some other time...”
“What if I'm rejected?”
These common phrases or beliefs also have an influence on how you feel at any given moment. To learn how to get over anxiety and fear, you have to be able to take control of the words you speak. These are some positive words or phrases you can say instead?
“I can surely do this!”
“Things always work out for me.”
"I am bold."
“I am unstoppable!”
“I make things happen because I'm smart.”
“I am confident.”
When you say these phrases and words, you would feel completely different. The secret is to speak them with strong physiology and to focus on them concurrently.
I remember figuring this out for myself. When I did, I wasn't so afraid anymore because sometimes the things we are afraid of, once we understand them more they're not so terrifying.
