A few degrees of extra warmth in the Ocean may lead to surprises.

Working in the Orkney Islands, a young female marine biologist, reeling from a recent break up finds a live GreenTurtle, a Goddess of the Sea, on the beach. This startling discovery about the  warming ocean, has deeper effects, enough in fact to change her relationship with her work colleague.

The Orkney archipelago lies in the path ot the Gulf Stream, or the North Atlantic Drift as it is also called. Continually millions of gallons of warm water pump out from the Caribbean and stream north east carrying zooplankton, phytoplankton and jelly fish towards the British Isles. Following this mobile food source, sea creatures such as turtles, basking sharks and fish reach our shores.

Green Turtle

Anna leant forward and gave Rosa a hug. She felt her breasts against hers and breathed in her perfume.

“Erik did not deserve you,” said Anna. “Go have your walk, take the mutt with you.”

“Kara, come,” said Rosa to the dog, “let’s go to the beach,” and she unhooked a frisbee from the wall.

Anna watched her through the door as Rosa strode out over the dunes with the black lab.

Behind her the hangar was quiet save for the gurgling as halibut broke the surface of their growing tanks.

They had been together now for six months, Anna and Rosa, two marine biologists working here in the Orkney Islands trying to crack the mystery of the breeding habits of the halibut for a university.

They dressed casual. Rosa’s retreating figure was clad in jeans, a fleece and walking boots. She was from Brazil, now twenty-nine and had worked all over the world on different research projects. She spoke Portuguese, English and Italian. Long dark hair framed a light brown triangular face. Her large eyes were round and wide set, the pupils dark as midnight, the lashes long and curving.

At five two she was a little smaller than Anna’s five foot six, yet she had an athletic hourglass build.

Anna in contrast was not only taller, heavier, fuller in figure but was a calm sandy blonde with amber eyes. As scientists both were practical, yet Rosa could also be wistful, dreamy, she was drawn to nature as a mystery whereas Anna sought to unravel the patterns in a more logical way.

A walk along the beach for Rosa was always a voyage of discovery.
