Tess wondered how something so devastating could usher in such fear and happiness at the same time. The world is a crazy place where death and fear go hand in hand, and where a stranger may turn out not to be a stranger after all.

Tess stood under the peppered sky as the funeral attendants lowered her aunt’s coffin down to her final resting place. Tess was alone now and a prisoner of fear. Her aunt’s last words played over and over in her mind like a broken record. Don’t trust strangers, always listen to that inner voice and trust what you hear.Go talk to Jack.

Tess was brought back to reality when Father James pulled her aside. “She’s with God, there is no doubt of that. Your Aunt Jane was an angel on earth.”

“Thank you Father, I know she’s gone home.”

“I’m here if you need to talk.” Father James squeezed her shoulder, and then walked on.

Tess’s best friend Suzie made her way through the crowd and gave Tess a hug. “Are you okay sweetie?”

Tears streamed down Tess’s face. “I knew this was coming. Why wasn’t I prepared?”

“I’m here for you. Call me, but don’t wait to long. I love you.”

Tess left the cemetery emotionally spent. She wanted to go home, curl up in a ball, and hide. She pulled up the driveway into the garage, got out of the car, and went into the house. First she discarded her shoes, and stood in the middle of the room like a frozen block. The doorbell rang and it gave her a jolt. She opened the door and there stood her neighbor, Bill.

He was holding a floral box and a dish in his hands. “ Mom made this for you, Tess. You have to be sure and eat. This box was left on your doorstep,” he added.

“Thanks, Bill. Tell your mom I appreciate it.”

“ You know we’ve spent a lot of time together these past few months. I was very fond of Jane. You’re a special person to me. I want to be more than a friend Tess,” he said with a smile.

“I’m really tired, let’s talk later. Thanks again.”

Tess shut the door, put the casserole in the kitchen then began to open the floral box. She unwrapped the paper, and saw a dozen black roses with a card, there was only one word, DEATH. Scared, Tess dropped the box. Who could be so mean? She ran for her cell phone, and crying again, called Suzie. Tess was crying so hard that Suzie couldn’t understand what she was trying to say.

“Tess I’m coming.”

Tess thought she had to be strong, holding back her tears during the funeral service. Now it was like a dam had burst and she couldn’t stop crying. She heard a car, went to the front door, and their stood Suzie.

“Thanks for coming.”

“What’s wrong?”
