This story revolves around the life of an Indian woman named Veena. It’s a story of her growth and survival in a fiercely male dominated work place where she is no less educated or competent, how she copes with office politics and yet remains away from it. The tale navigates through her younger confident days to a more mature woman of substance.

India, a land of twenty nine states and seven union territories, each place having its own unique culture, language, costume, food and festival, is a distinct example of ‘Unity in Diversity’. In this land of more than 1300 million populace, stands out a girl with dreams fluttering in her eyes. This is the story of an ordinary girl Veena with extraordinary thoughts of achieving something incredible in her life. Little did she know that life is a visceral truth that comes delicately wrapped in layers of lies. Anyone can dream, dreams are free. It is the success and failure that is sold here at an enormously heart breaking price.
Veena, a shy, reserved and extremely introverted girl, always kept to herself. Being an excellent student throughout her academic life, topping the class each semester became her obsession. She had the correct ingredients of the perfect daughter and was daddy’s pride and joy. She was schmaltzy about her family and all those who were her near and dear ones.
She would wilfully engage in any conversation relating to Quantum Physics, but the thought of being surrounded by people in a social setting would frighten her. What her friends, albeit meagre in number, did not know about Veena was that she used to day dream a lot. She too wanted to have boy friends like others her age, but then the shield of seriousness that she held would have to be compromised. So, she preferred dreaming and drifting in and out of her realms of fantasies, romancing the impossible lots with a frivolous touch of attitude. She loved her soul stirring music, feet tapping at times, anything that would drift her away from the mundane cycle of life. She loved her long and relaxed walks, loved the uncomplicated world that she had created in her mind, where she lived and danced wild, unknown to anyone, communing with her own spiritual self.
A petite, dusky girl who is strongly opinionated, Veena always stood up for honesty, empathy, healthy competitions, constructive arguments and rhetorical criticism. Short in stature but high in her views of the world and society, she never knew how to sugar coat conversations and hence her blunt talks never found way into the hearts of her acquaintances. She had a bunch of very few friends who knew that inside the tough exterior was a child-like pure heart of gold. She too treasured her close group of friends.
Soon years flew past and Veena grew up to be a successful engineer, proudly wielding a post graduate degree from a premier engineering institute, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. She has a reason to be proud of. She has passed out as a topper from one of the most reputed engineering institutes, a result of years of discipline, dedication and sacrifice. However the icing on this dainty cake came in the form of campus recruitment to one of the most sought after consultancy organization and a globally recognised Multi National Company which is known for its first-class employee offerings in the country. Now that she is empowered by a high paying job, what more can a girl ask for in this employment starved market for engineers? Her honesty, sincerity and commitment to hard work in personal life and academic career has thus made her a strong and qualified person that she is today. It called for a party and a simple, straight forward, plain girl goes all out to celebrate the occasion. After all she deserved a patina of polish.
Veena is excited for her first day in office. She has been instructed to remain seated in a conference room till she is called for completing further formalities of employee induction. She happens to be the last on roll of new trainees and after seeing each one called out, she is left alone with her thoughts now. This gives her an opportunity to feel the place.
The silence inside the room calms her mind, although outside the transparent door, she can sense the presence of disgruntled employees, each one trying to trample the other. Or is she just getting nervous? The loud décor inside the room seemed to be radiating signs of catastrophe. O No! Why is she thinking all negative on the first day of her corporate life? She tries to rescind her otherwise disturbing thoughts and find some peace of mind in herself.
As she struggles with her mixed emotions, she notices a colossal - supposed to be inspirational - canvas on the wall that portrays an executive saying ‘SUCCESS IS THE BEST REVENGE’, as if conveying ‘HELL HATH NO FURY’. What does it mean? Should she be worried? Why is she flooded with noxious notions? She cajoles herself concentrating more on the word SUCCESS. Revenge is for the mean and evil. It must have some positive connotation that she is missing or misinterpreting. Suddenly the gentleman in the picture manifests itself into a Satan in her mind, intoxicating her.
What’s the matter with her? She shakes herself out of it, dismissing all her deranged thoughts and awaits her turn patiently. After sometime she is called and all company procedures are completed smoothly. Now she is formally an employee of the organisation. What a proud feeling!!!
