TONY JOHNSONENGREVI ANIMAL PRESERVESHALIMAR

No human has ever been in the presence of Ki-ZerShaz.  Not even when the Treaty was created was there a face to face.   I am the first.

It is not  a political discussion; the ZerShaz have conquered all human planets, control space.  He's going to meet with me concerning his wife.

His wife, Sharon, a human woman.    A human woman who'd been snatched from the past, who somehow became the Great Space Pirate, who'd helped his people to defeat us.

He's going to interrogate me about what had been done to destroy her memory.

Sitting in the junk room of the house being used as the 'Fortress' here on the planet of Shalimar, I reach over and pour myself another drink. Medicinal purposes.

Jill should have told him. She's a medical doctor. She knew Sharon personally. She had to have picked up something wrong and what it was.  I'm a  psychiatrist, I've been dragged from Beta Mar, in the 3rd Sector, to this planet in the 11th. Well, not dragged, flown in one of their horrible war ships and dumped here.

And I'm supposed to tell the god/king of the known galaxy that Sharon, his human wife, has been psi-probed.

It wasn't just a wipe of the Zees, it was an amputation of everything she had been.

A med student, a rahtid med student could have the audacity to psi-probe...He shouldn't even have a probe.

So how do I tell a husband...that every memory his wife had of him has been removed?  How do I tell the ZerShaz people that their goddess; the one who gave them the victory, is gone?

The Proof

THE PROOF

KI-ZERSHAZ

I enter Johnson's room. He chokes on the beverage he is quaffing, drops to his knees. I pause three seconds, then demand; "Enlighten me as to this psi-probing."

His eyes refuse to rise from the floor, he must think me a savage beast.

"Johnson, grant me knowledge!" I appeal.

His voice is reedy. "Great Lord, it is a method of--"

"Brainwashing." I interpose.

His eyes climb to my chest.  There is an element of Shari to him; their skins are similar in hue and there is a looseness in his posture which shouts he was never subject to discipline. Viewing him, my resolve loosens, as if he were of Shari's lineage. I compose my voice softer.

"Rise, sit there, explain." I grant.

He slowly elevates, slides back upon the sofa. His eyes meet my arm.

"Johnson, pretend I am your Taxi driver and speak to me."

His mouth wiggles, perhaps he suppresses a smile, for at our first encounter he had thought I human.

Having lived among humans for the majority of my actuality it is not arduous to portray one of them. Garbed in an archaic human costume, a tam to hid the largeness of my head, a visor to mask my eyes, my skin deeply tanned by the sun of Beta Mar, I appeared as human as he.

I knew he would require a Taxi to take him to McCartney Hall where his concert of Reggae Music was to be presented. It was believed Shari would attend as that was music of her milieu.  Johnson summoned a Taxi, I arrived. Obtaining no curiosity, I conveyed him to the concert hall, then accompanied him to the street where humans teemed.

I could not use vision to penetrate the crowd, there were thousands of humans swarming. I let my spirit waft into the throng and found her.

I perceive Johnson recalls those moments we stood in the city of Byro on Beta Mar. When confident he is capable I ask: "You have utilized psi-probing?"

"No, Great Lord, I have not." He is definite.

"You are a psychiatrist."

"My area of specialization was Labour relations. I had no private patients. But further, it is a process I disdain."

"But you appreciate the effect?"

"Yes, Great Lord."

His response is emphatic. I can trust his instruction, for he appears one who would not build affirmation unless certain.
