When we found out where we were sitting earlier, I told her that Bernie was firmly on Victor's side. Anyone in charge would be told about anything we said that wasn't appropriate. If I made one mistake, I would lose the chance to work for Nova.

Vic was not a bad guy, Babs said. "Last year, he got Bernie a nice raise."

I thought he should have. Vic's mistake on the Acme job put Bernie in the hot seat. I should have had that job and could have done it right.

Bernie smiled at what Babs said. "Honey, Robert and Victor have been enemies for a long time." The person who gets the Nova job will be able to make our tools better than ever. Also, get a nice raise.

It was technology that caused the trouble. Victor worked as a lawyer. His only goal was to get promoted. He was bad at planning and writing code. There would be no new technology if he got the job. There would just be a mess.

As someone walked up to the table, the light got even darker. Vick was there. He shook Bernie's hand and said, "Merry Christmas." "Babs, it's great to see you again," he said, but he didn't shake her hand. Instead, he put it to his lips.

That would have been silly of me to do, but Victor could get away with it. He was a tall, fit black man. He looked like an executive because he was dressed so well in a pricey suit. That's likely why he was sitting next to them.
