Introduction: Inspirational Seasons

Confronting the seasons in our lives can be difficult and overwhelming, but they can encourage and refresh as well, leaving us inspired. Of course, the sources of inspiration for writers are as varied as the creative mind of the individual author allows them to be. I have often found inspiration from having weekly meetings with a fellow author over coffee and pastries. We talk about all manner of topics: current events, books we have read, and the latest poetry or satire material available. We also compare present literature to favorite poets and writers of our childhood: C.S. Lewis, Asimov, Dickens, Blake, and Poe, to name a few. These meetings are always insightful and thought-provoking. They keep my mind energized and contemplating potential, like a young man discovering the possible futures which await.

I also read periodicals full of articles and facts which cause the mind to ponder. Poetry is one such magazine. It’s filled with commentary and poetry from different poets which broadens the mental faculties. I learned about “break beat” poets from this periodical, and I wondered if such a description would fit my writing. I rejected it after further thought because categories lead to stereotypes which end in internalized biases. I want none of that stigma. Yet, it is always a season for deeper investigation and growing.

Often, I spend time listening to music. Classical, jazz, and contemporary music stay on my radio. Songs remind of past days and help me contemplate the future. For example, rap music is innovative in the way artists use words and redefine culture. Likewise, watching a variety of shows on television is enlightening and inspires me to write. We can always bring changes of mood and climate to our lives by what we view and listen to daily.

Fortunately, I will write to keep the weather bright throughout my life. To such an extent, a reoccurring fountain of encouragement for my writing comes from above, like a warm, gentle spring rain. Although some find a belief in a being of supernatural power constraining and a cause of conflict, recognizing Him as the source of my well-being is not beneath me as a limited mortal in the summer of life. In fact, I wrote the second chapter of this book with prayers to God in my mind. It’s not surprising that many would argue the Book of Psalms represents some of the greatest poetry ever composed in honor of Him. Indeed, prayers of love, hope, kindness, and praise for Him are food which fill and sustain my soul.

However, the body also needs physical nutrition to survive. Truthfully, we enjoy food with a variety of seasonings and tastes; food is always worthy of poetry. I constructed poems about food in another chapter. Eating is always inspirational, especially while watching your favorite sport. I filled another chapter with haiku and other poetry devoted to sports and the game of life. Finally, participation in such activities happens during specified times. For this reason, I used poetry to talk about the four seasons nature grants many parts of the world.

No event is more inspirational than love. I am fortunate that my wife is a constant uplifting source of strength and resiliency. I am grateful we will weather the seasons of life together. Poems about love appear in this volume because of the power love offers in all temperatures and under all conditions. Some of the works are positive and some touch upon the difficulties of love. Love covers a life time and brings all kinds of changes for us. I touch on struggles faced in our lives in the poem at the end of this book. Many challenges are monumental while others take on a more personal nature. Even with this knowledge, we may be unaware of historic changes which play out right outside the periphery of all of our senses. Nevertheless, those are the seasons we are given.

Enjoy “Seasons of Our Lives” !

Chapter 2: Prayers

Praise for God

Invisible! Omnipotent! Magnificent God!

Unseen are all Your Attributes!

Invincible! Omniscience! Majestic God!

Unknown are all of Your Abilities!

Infinite Ocean of Compassion and Mercy, O God!

Understanding of the truest power of forgiving belongs only to You.

O Lord!

Let my weaknesses evaporate with Your Loving Flame,

Remove my pain.

Reduce my rain.

Remedy my complaints.

Mighty Master! Gentle General! Compassionate Counselor!

Praise Be to Your Grace!

Caring Creator! Dove of Love!

Praise be to Your Place:

Holy Reign from Above.

O Lord!

I sing Your Praise:

Ancient of All Days,

Forever You Amaze! The Great I Am!

I sing Your Praise.

O Lord!
