Beschreibung

Furious at being forced into an arranged marriage, Arabella Stroud runs away from home to teach her overbearing father a lesson. But she makes the mistake of cutting through Stonemouth Forest, where she learns a lesson of her own when she’s captured by a trio of ogres, and the hulking, well-hung brutes roughly have their way with her.

Arabella opened her eyes to the sight of an unhewn stone wall dimly lit by wavering orange firelight. Her cheek was pressed to cool, rough stone dotted with pebbles and bits of grit. Her head throbbed. Her thoughts were sludgy, confused. Where was she? What was going on?

Behind her she could hear low, guttural grunts and grumbles, fabric rustling, metal clinking. The grumbles sounded like an animal. No, more than one animal. Two, at least. Big ones. The way the sounds echoed suggested the room she was in was large and hard-surfaced, with little in the way of furniture or décor to dampen the noise. She smelled a woodfire, moss, dirt, and strongest of all, a sort of animalistic odor. Something musky and powerful and unlike anything she had ever smelled before. And there was another smell, too. Something aromatic. Floral. Why was it so familiar?

Then she knew. It was the sachet she kept in her wardrobe at home. The odor of it clung to her clothes for hours at a stretch. But why was it so strong? She clearly wasn’t at home. Oh, wait. That’s right. Her clothes. She had packed a bag with some of her clothes and—

Her muzzy-headedness vanished in a flash as she remembered what had happened. There had been a hissing, spitting, take-no-prisoners argument with her father after he told her that by all the holy hosts of Highfont, she would marry Halister Frimp, Southport’s Head of Customs, or else be disinherited. Arabella refused to be forced into a marriage with some chinless bureaucrat thrice her age just because her father, the ever-ambitious merchant Auberon Stroud, wanted to forge a lucrative bond with an influential official. To show her father how serious she was, she had packed a bag that very night and run away from home. Her destination was the town of Vathy, about ten miles southwest of their home on the outskirts of Southport. Her friend Kess lived there and would no doubt put her up (and put up with her) for a while. Arabella had had no thought of what she might do beyond that, because she fully expected her father, a man with a multitude of connections—including a few within the ranks of the royal rangers—to track her down fairly quickly. Her intention had been only to show him the depths of her opposition to the arranged marriage in hopes that he would come to his senses and nix the stupid idea.
