Tales from Jotolandia

3 Gay Short Stories

Butch Gloss

Enrique was one of those guys who just held a lot of resentment towards the more feminine males in our community. Whenever he talked about the "fems" he always did so with a lot of disgust. Apparently, in his mind, he was the epitome of masculinity. I found it hard to listen to all his negativity. Not necessarily because of what he was saying, it was just that his lip gloss kept reflecting the fluorescent lights in the room and it was distracting. He simply found it necessary to keep rambling on about how men should just be "normal" and how no one ever suspects him of being Gay. I know I was supposed to be listening to what he was saying, but his right eye caught my attention. He kept blinking his eyes a lot, and from where I was sitting, it was the same way my sister's eyes blinked whenever her mascara would stick together. Enrique worked at a shipyard with all the other burly men and interestingly enough, no one else ever noticed the permanent rouge on his rosy cheeks. Yet despite the obvious, he kept talking about guys that act like fags and how he couldn't stand them. He just kept spewing ignorance and eventually I stopped listening. I felt sorry for Enrique, it was sad to see how blind he was about not being able to accept himself. Apparently he was someone who had never been exposed to the theme of internalized homophobia. Here he was, practically in drag, being condescending about men who are effeminate. Enrique has a nice smile though, I'll give him that much. He smiles a lot, but then again, ignorance is bliss.

Miracle Water

Alejandro always annoyed the hell out of me. It was nothing in particular about him, he was just one of those people, that for whatever reason, you just don't vibe with. At times, I felt he was trying too hard to impress people. He knew someone that I knew who knew someone that he knew, and so every once in a while our social circles would cross. Even though we would be hanging out casually, he would consistently show up in a suit and tie. I could understand just coming from work, but it was almost as if he was trying to put up a show for people, letting them know he worked somewhere important. The first couple of times we spoke he kept trying to use elevated language with me. It's not like we were on campus, or playing a game of Jeopardy, so I found it unnecessary. Most times he was using terms out of context anyway, so he would have been better off speaking casually. He always had some grand excursion to embark on after hanging out with the guys and of course he always had to make an announcement out of it. Despite all of his bragging, there was one aspect about him I could tell he wasn't too comfortable with; he was overweight. It probably wouldn't have shown so much had he not insisted on wearing his pants two sizes too small. One day out of nowhere, he started showing up with this huge bottle of water. He tells everyone that he is on some type of organic diet that is going to take all the toxins out of his body and help him lose weight. I didn't pay much attention until I saw him drop close to twenty pounds in three weeks, and then another ten pounds two weeks later. My inner voice couldn't help but think, "Damn, that must be some miracle water." I gave him credit because I know it takes a lot of effort to lose weight and I could see that it was building up his confidence. Within a month, he had a new boyfriend. Just a few days later I met up with a friend at a club and by chance Alejandro walks in with his man, sees me and my friend, and turns around like he doesn't recognize me. I pointed Alejandro out to my friend, who turns around and tells me, "I know that shady bitch. He parties crazy. Every time I've seen him at the parties he's all tweaked out on Crystal." In that instance, it all made sense and I couldn't help but think to myself "Hmm… I knew there was more to this story than that big ass bottle of water."
