THE GREENLAND PROPHECY

      Alana was packing her bags.

 “Off again are we?” said Livia her flatmate.

 “Yes”, said Alana,”Scotland, photo shoot for country casuals.”

 “Lucky you “ said Livia “ I never seem to get out of London.”     “Well, it’ll probably be cold and there’ll be midges,” replied Alana . ”That reminds me - insect repellent.”

As a model, Alana had to be prepared for the most appalling conditions. A photo shoot could demand one to be scantily clad, naked even, frolicking in the winter sea and smiling. The public had no idea of how tough it was. Starving oneself, constantly preening, changing your hair, walking correctly. True it had been exciting for about a year and then well, it was a job.

You couldn’t relax, eat like a pig, get sunburn or trip over and crack an ankle, otherwise you didn’t work. And there was always the competition – hundreds of younger girls were pressing all the time to take your place, so you didn’t complain, took the jobs when you got them in case the agency didn’t ring again.

      There was the travel. Alana had been all over Europe, to the USA and even Greenland for the Vodka shoot. Usually you didn’t have time for sightseeing but in Greenland of all places, she got stuck with the camera crew because the plane broke down. Four whole extra days, in brilliant weather admittedly. They had amused themselves as much as one can in Greenland – a skidoo trip, an outing on the fjord in a kind of leather boat and a visit to the fortune teller’s hut.
