Once upon a time, there lived a kind and noble king, who ruled over a kingdom by the sea, that also included a number of small distant islands.
Because they thought of themselves as being separate and different to the other citizens of the kingdom, there came a time, when the people of the islands began to quarrel with the main government and revolt against its laws.
The islanders had become very angry and the dispute was complicated. The king had all the best people there trying to sort the problems out, but there came a day when he realised that, in order to show the proper regard for his subjects, it was necessary for him to go to the islands himself, and help to settle it in person.
The king had only been married, at the time, for about a year, so when he told the queen, she was sad for him to go, as well as concerned for his safety. But he assured her that he had the best of ships, crew and provisions, and that with his intervention and show of care, the matter would soon be resolved. And he promised his wife, that then, they would be able to properly settle in to their marriage too and start a family.
So he set sail the next morning. But the ship had not travelled very far, when disastrously, it ran aground on some rocks and stuck fast, so that nothing the crew tried would move it off. To make it worse, after several days of trying, and just when they were almost out of ideas and hope, a great wind began to rise, and it was clear that a storm was brewing. It looked as though, one way or another, all their lives would soon be lost.
The king went out on deck by himself to be alone and think. He was looking out over the sea when, to his amazement, a beautiful, elegant mermaid swam up next to the boat and looked up at him. She could see what their problem was, and she told him that she could help him to move the boat, if only he would do something for her that she wanted, in return, and the king eagerly promised that he would.
"I will move the boat and save all of your lives, if only you will promise to give to me your first born child," she said.
