There lies the great river Mara

Known by the locals as Chepkulo

There lies a highway

That cuts across the south rift

There lies a village

That straddles both the river and the highway

In the village there is a girl

Her name is Koko

She is the muse of this poem

The receiver of both love and hate

The subject of praise and antagonism

Here lives poems

Of love and hate in equal measure

Have you seen the beauty of the highlands?

The girl with a gap on her milk white teeth

The girl whose smile melts your heart

Have you seen her?

Have you seen the beauty of the highlands?

Have you seen the gem of these highlands?

I have travelled all over these lands and the highland lady is the most beautiful

I will not tolerate my parents being tortured by the white man's tongue

With all the makeup caked up in your face

Like a boy adorning white ochre during his circumcision

What if it rains on you and your face becomes muddy

Who will marry a lazy woman of your ilk?

When other women are farming you're hiding in the house as if you have a skin ailment

Who will marry a lady who doesn't know how to hold a jembe
