Like many people, I first learnt to knit when I was a small child taught by my mother and grandmother, but the interest in creating things with yarn and needles never really stuck. It wasn’t until we were waiting on the arrival of my very first nephew that I decided to take up the needles again. After all, there is really no warmer welcome for a new baby than a super soft, cozy, hand-knitted blanket!

Working on baby knits is such a great way for beginners to build their confidence in knitting, allowing them to work on a wide range of different designs, using a selection of stitches and techniques, and the smaller scale of the projects makes them much more manageable. Seasoned knitters will enjoy building their skills with the more complex makes and fresh ideas for babies and children.

There is nothing more satisfying than knitting something for a new baby—aside from snuggling a new baby, of course—whether you are creating a gift to be treasured, something to welcome your own new addition, or even to donate to a local neo-natal hospital unit or charity—there are plenty of ideas and designs in this collection for newborns through to toddlers.

It was such a great joy to design and create the projects in this book, mixing different stitches and techniques, working with both classic and more contemporary color and yarn combinations to create this collection of knitted baby blankets. I hope that you have just as much fun making them and wrapping the little ones in your life in a handmade hug!
