Cal was my friend for twenty years.  A few months after we met Cal was setting forth on his great opportunity.   I warned him not to make a link with the past.   But Cal didn't take my advice.

Chapter One

"No matter what, do NOT contact Lisa."

Cal looked through the glass.  I assumed he comprehended all the ramifications.  Although I'd only known him six months, we'd become friends almost the day I came to work for the company.    We were in different departments at different levels, but somehow began taking lunch and a few after work activities.

Cal was leaving the Island to attend University.  It was a big deal.   He'd worked his way up from nothing, and was able to qualify for a prestigious institution.  It was a real tirumph.

I, having attended University abroad expected that he would be captured by the different culture, the people, the course work so  contacting Lisa would be beyond  his thought.

I knew Cal pretty well, or so I thought.

Cal had made it a key point that he did not want to get tied down to anything until he had  'completed' himself.   This meant an education, a successful business..

He had a lot of casual girlfriends as his view of life was to keep everything fluid until after he'd reached his goals.   He'd dealt with Lisa because he knew she was migrating.   He thought it was a one off.

He never mentioned Lisa or any of the other women he randomly dated.  Then, she phoned him at work. She told him she was having his baby. Cal replied he'd always used protection.   She responded that she had punched holes in the condom andshe was pregnant for him.

I was with him when the call came in.  Considering how loud she spoke, I heard every word.  The rubbish she blathered wouldn't work on the average man.  In fact, would provoke a long set of insults and obscenities.

But Cal was not the average man.

He had let her speak,  said nothing.  She ended the long distance call.

When she'd hung up he told me the few facts of their 'relationship.''   We joked then moved on to other topics.

That phone conveersation took place about two months before Cal would  depart for University  Lisa had no idea Cal would  leave the island and be in the same country she had migrated to.   She'd assume he was here, call the office and be told he no longer worked for the company, and that would end whatever plan she had.

As long as Cal made no contact.
