Rain pounded against the windowpanes with great force. The wind howled like a lament in the night as Adrian huddled on his couch, clutching a steaming cup of tea. Despite the warm glow of the fireplace, the chill of loneliness had haunted him since Nicoleta's departure.

The mobile phone on the coffee table suddenly vibrated, breaking the oppressive silence of the house. Adrian picked it up, puzzled. The screen displayed "Unknown Number."

Adrian: (whispering to himself) Who could it be at this hour?

With trembling hands, he swiped his finger to answer the call. The initial silence was interrupted by a hoarse sigh that sent shivers down his spine.

Whispering Voice: (with a familiar, yet inhuman tone) Adrian...

Adrian: (with a quavering voice) Nicoleta? Is that you?

Whispering Voice: (with a muted and distorted tone) Yes, Adrian... it's me.

Adrian felt a lump in his throat. The voice he heard was identical to that of his wife, Nicoleta, but beyond the emotion of hearing her, there was something unsettling, as if it came from a dark and distant place.

Adrian: (with tears in his eyes) Nicoleta, where are you? What's happening?
