Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. Member of the Order of the White Rose, a Neo-Jacobite society which attracted many writers and artists in the 1890s and 1900s, he is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St. Andrews are named after him.
Andrew Lang’s book
English and Scotch Fairy Tales, which today we propose to modern readers, was published in 1890 in the first volume of
Folk-Lore, a quarterly review of Myth, Tradition, Institution, & Custom.
Lang collected several English and Scottish folktales in his lifetime and kindly agreed to make them more accessible to students of folklore by jointly printing them in this extraordinary collection.
