Harry
by: Ellen Morris
His mother was standing in the door, hollering “Harry!” The young boy did not answer, he was too busy looking for that elusive needle in a haystack. The woman watched her son as he went about his task with patience and steadfast endurance, that only a child could have. Knowing the prize, in the end, would be the world, at least that is what it meant to him.
Ellen was a frail woman and Harry was always testing his luck with her. The time period when this story takes place is in the late eighteen hundred's, early nineteen hundred. When cars were not around, and the nearest phone was down at the corner grocery store.
They lived in the rural area of Kentucky, they rented the house they lived in, an old farmhouse. They did not have their own room, but it was good enough.
Ellen wanted Harry to go and get Emma, her oldest. Emma had gone to the neighbor’s house to visit. Ellen was in labor with her last child and she wanted help.
Emma was nineteen and not married yet. She had started dating a young man that lived by the Christ Church. Ellen wondered if he was the preacher son. Emma looked more like her side of the family, born with blonde hair, and gray eyes. Tall for her age, Ellen was sure she was going to be at least six foot. Ellen wishes her children could have gone to school, but it cost too much to do so.
The next daughter Esther was named after the Esther of the Bible. She was born with dark brown hair, which the pictures of Esther were of a woman with dark brown hair. She had beautiful big brown eyes, with an olive complexion, the girl was skinny as a rail when she was born.
The day Ellen delivered Esther she just popped out, there was not that much pain at all. She felt like it was a bad period, but the child cried day and night. The easiest birth and the child cried more than the oldest, she could not figure out what was wrong with her. She was now seventeen and the best thing that happened to her. The only thing was Esther was to shy for her own good.
Mack was adorable when he was born, but he weighed more than the other two, it had to be a boy thing. He too was born with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes, he looked just like his father. She was wondering if she was going to have a blonde hair boy. She was sure Emma was just a mishap.
Then Tom came along, sure enough, the blonde came back, Tom with blonde hair and gray eyes. Only Tom had a little red in his hair. The Irish were coming out in this child. Then there was Harry, nothing unusual happened. He looked just like his father, hair, and eyes. By now she so accomplished to having children, she got right up and started doing what needed to be done in the house, washing clothes, cleaning the house, hanging out laundry. Someone had to do it, the girls were still too little.
With Tom started the boy train, next came Harry, Richard, then Charles and Oscar and then came the last one Anna, what a dream. She was the perfect little Irish girl. She was momma made over, and so beautiful, sweet as fudge. But now things were different, the child was only three and Ellen felt sick all the time. Her legs, stomach, and headache all the time. She felt dizzy, which made her feel sick to her stomach and therefore she would throw up. They couldn't afford a doctor, so she dealt with the pain as best as she could. She was sure she had told William her husband.
Chapter 2
William, Will to his friends, was having a wonderful day. He was at work and got a promotion. This would make Ellen, his wife of twenty years, very happy. They had just had their ninth child. They now had four girls and five boys. The baby was a girl, and hopefully the last. Having all the children had worn Ellen down, she wasn't doing good after having the baby. Will was worried about this, he didn't know what he would do without her.
It was hard for Will to feel anything but good today. It was a new century, with promises of new beginnings for their family and the country. New industries were coming to America, people who had new ideas. He was still hoping that the new electricity was going to make its way to his house, even though he rented.
Their house had five rooms, three bedrooms, kitchen and living room. The bathroom was an outhouse, a hundred yards away from the house, they bathed in a number three tub on Saturday's.
The girls were known to clean up during the week, Will thought of Ellen and how good she smelled this morning before he went to work. He couldn't think about that now, he had to go home and see his lovely wife and baby girl. The boys were in one bedroom, the girls in the other, Will and Ellen had their own bedroom.
Will was right, Ellen was so excited but very tired. She was glad that Emma and Esther were around. If it had not been for them, she was sure she would have been dead.
Ellen was watching Will holding Anna, she was glad they had married. Will was so good with the children, except when they had a dirty diaper. His nose wrinkled, which Ellen knew that indicated Anna had a dirty diaper. Ellen said, "give her to me, it looks like she needs a diaper. Will said, "This child is sucking on your breast, how can it smell so bad?" Ellen laughs, "I don't know, I think God does it, so men won't change diapers. Will looked at her with love in his eyes, "It must be true, I can't change them."
Ellen was in the middle of changing the diaper when Oscar came in the bedroom and jumped into Will's arms. Will looked at his youngest son and signed, he hugged the little guy and said, "Oscar how many times have we told you to knock on the door first and wait for us to tell you to come in?" Oscar looked at his dad with admiration and said, "I don't know daddy, how many times?"
Ellen laughed, the boy had his fathers sense of humor. Ellen looked at Will and said, "serves you right, you shouldn't teach them to behave like that." Will said, "I didn't teach them to behave like nothing, what are you talking about?" Ellen laughed and said, "you know what I'm talking about?"
Oscar looked up at his dad and said, "What are you two talking about?" Ellen laughed again. Will stood up with Oscar in his arms, he looked over at Ellen and asked, "Do you need anything?" Ellen scooped up Anna and said, "No, not right now, but that is good news about the promotion? When do you start getting it?" Will said, "Next paycheck." Ellen said, "Just in time." Will said, "Just in time, for what?" Ellen said with a big smile on her face, "life!"
