Beschreibung

Love, Grace is about two nineteen-year-olds who both have cancer living in a hospital, but Grace is only back for a “visit” from where she lives now. Throughout the play, you figure out the relationship between Emmett and Grace. Emmett throughout the story becomes protective of Grace, trying to help her but she’s resisting. He also wants to go join her of where she lives now, but she is saying no for a reason. In the end, she tells Emmett that he needs to move on from loving her because it’s never going to happen because of where is. The main purpose of this play was to portray how some people feel alone and like there’s no one’s there because they’re scared to ask for help. In the very end, Grace asks a question that makes one think about tomorrow.

SHADOW GRACE

GRACE looking in a mirror, SHADOW GRACE talking to her

What are you doing with your life? What’s the point of it? You studied for exams that didn’t even matter. You stressed yourself out to the point where you were sick. It doesn’t matter anyway, you're not doing yourself any favors.

GRACE looks at SHADOW GRACE

You were taken for granted by your friends, you made everyone happy while not being happy yourself. Who do you think you are, lying to the ones you love saying you’re ‘fine’. I think you’d be better off not being here, you’re just not good enou-

EMMETT

EMMETT walks in seeing GRACE in deep thought staring at nothing

Grace, are you okay? You seem… off.

GRACE looking up from the mirror with water in her eyes

GRACE

(wavering voice)

The nice girl should always say she’s fine, but I’m not. I give up, I can’t do this anymore. I am used as a person. I don’t matter to anyone, I’m just a small portion that’s thrown away by everyone.

EMMETT

EMMETT walks towards GRACE

(stern voice)

No, you're not. Stop talking about yourself like that. Last time you were talking like this, I almost lost you. I’m not going to lose you this time. Stop. Please.

GRACE

(mad)

You almost lost me? When we were in school you barely looked at me, you hated me. You’d be happy if I were gone. I’ve been in this hospital longer than you. You don’t know what it’s like to not have friends, to have everyone think that you’re a freak. When I tried to go back to school I was treated like I was an oddity. Even you mocked me.

EMMETT

I never did that. I didn’t even know what you were going through at the time before I found out I had cancer two years ago. You know I wouldn’t make fun of anyone.

GRACE

small laugh

You wouldn’t now, but back then. You did. Especially towards me. There was a note left on my locker the day I left school.

GRACE pulls out a note

From you.

“You are the worst thing to ever walk this planet, being the outcast is not an excuse to be the center of attention. You are the most disgraceful thing in this school and won’t live to see graduation. I hope I never see you again.

                  -Emmett Forrester”

See this is from you, it has your name on it. Along with the words “Grace Bennett will burn in hell”  painted on my locker.

EMMETT

(remembering with a sad tone)

Oh, I forgot about that. I guess I wanted to block that out and I did. Look I’m sorry. At the time I was dating Aubrey and she made me sign it. I didn’t want to but she threatened to break up with me if I didn’t. I actually thought you were the keenest person in this town.

GRACE

So you didn’t even have the guts to stand up for yourself. You let Aubrey manipulate you into doing her bidding. She broke up with you when everyone found out you had cancer.  Karma comes back around don’t it?

EMMETT

I… I guess it does. I never thought about it before. But now I see what you had to go through and I will never forgive myself. The precautions, chemotherapy, the surgery. I just didn’t know, okay... I see why you talk to yourself now. Cause--

GRACE

(jaded)

Because no one can hurt you if you don’t have anyone to judge you, it makes you feel not alone, safe. I’ve told you this before.

EMMETT

...Do you want anything to drink?

GRACE

GRACE gives a melancholy look

You know I can’t.

EMMETT

(pragmatically)

Right. I forgot. I don’t get to see you much anymore so I’ve forgotten some things.

GRACE

It’s a bit hard to get here from where I’ve been.
