Once upon a time a happy family lived on the island of Origan.
The mother raised sheep, the youngest son used to take them grazing.
The daughter helped the mother taking care of the vines, that shaded the pergola, in front of their home.
After the sheep had been sheared, Grandma used to take them the wool and teach her granddaughter how to clean it and make bundles to spin.
Luca, the eldest son, went out to sea with his father, to help him fish sea-bass, sea-bream, sole, john dory and scorpion fish.
On Easter day, daddy brought back to Origan presents, bought after a profitable sale of lambs, wool and fish at the market in Lussin (that means Breast).
Anna, his wife, got a black donkey, with white hair around her eyes.
Luca got a white puppy with black spots.
The donkey was named Jaksa and the puppy Yuppie.
They were not just domesticated animals that were born to work: they were pets.
One evening, after a dinner based on bread and Cherso olives, freshly fished sardines grilled with rosemary herbs, everybody was bored.
The family was housebound to shelter from a strong bora wind.
It was one of those summer bora winds foreboding of heavy night thunderstorms on the Adriatic Sea.
Storms that looked as if they were ripping the sky open with their flashes of lightning and were bombing the earth with their thunders.
Yuppie was hiding under Luca’s bed.
Daddy was keeping his children entertained with a gruesome tale of a cruel captain and his crew of pirates.
The storm was over by the time all the humans in the house had fallen asleep.
Yuppie went out to pee and saw that Jaksa the donkey was going somewhere.
The light of the stars and the rising moon lit the path where the rain had made the earth darker.
The contrast between the white rocks of the dry landscape towards the sea and the path followed by the two animals gave them confidence in their way.
The donkey entered a cave on the hill past the beach.
A cave the dog did not know was there.
Yuppie managed to follow Jaksa in the ever darker half-light. He could smell the donkey even if its smell was mixed with the scent of humidity from fresh water.
At last, they came to a well!
Jaksa drank, copied by Yuppie.
When they had enough, they rested side by side, as friends do.
