Beschreibung

Zara has spent her adult life being two different people. The good Muslim daughter, all set to marry the man her family approves of – and a free-spirited British millennial, who parties as hard as she works. Over one dramatic weekend, the lies she's been telling to keep these two worlds apart begin to unravel and she is forced to confront her real identity. Danusia Samal's play Out of Sorts was the winner of Theatre503's International Playwriting Award 2018. It premiered at Theatre503, London, in October 2019.

This play has been in my head for a long, long time and there were a lot of people who helped bring it here! People who read terrible early drafts, who offered their notes, feedback and support, who listened to me moan about how it wasn’t working! So, in no particular order, special thanks to: The whole team at 503 who were so welcoming and supportive, especially Lisa, Steve, Jake, Andrew and Jennifer; the judges who picked Out of Sorts as 503’s winning play and gave me the shock of my life; to Nic Wass and Jane Fallowfield who read early drafts – your feedback was invaluable; Fin Kennedy at Tamasha; Nick Hern Books; Chino Odimba; Alex Rusher; all the mates who read and performed sections (Josh, Sarah I’m looking at you!); Tanuja and all the brilliant cast and creative team who have brought the text to life and dealt with lots and lots of hummus-y mess; and last but not least my family, who have taught me to be ‘out of sorts’ and proud.

Set

The stage is split, simultaneously representing two rooms in two very different households. We see the living room of Zara’s family home. A small, slightly worn council flat, but very very clean and tidy. Bits of kitsch furniture: doilies, a golden-framed picture of Mecca, a large dining table. One door leads to the kitchen, the other to the front entrance.

Coexisting onstage is Zara’s British home. A small kitchen in a flat she shares with her best friend Alice. By contrast it is very IKEA and millennial. Messy. Girls’ clothes, papers strewn everywhere. There’s a breakfast bar and stools, bits of furniture the girls have put there ad hoc. The result is a space they own, occupy, and relax in.
