Teddy the Newt

The sweet smell of recent rain drifted around Teddy, making him wake. In his small hollow log cave, he flexed his tired legs and flapped his flabby tail.

Teddy popped into the moist evening haze, softening his waxy skin. Deep grey clouds held the damp air still above him, but kept in the day’s warmth. This warmth had woken him from his long winter nap and Teddy could feel the conditions were right to sneak throughout the night. For Teddy was a newt, a great crested newt, and this was the time to find his pond. The pond of his birth, of his ancestors' birth and where he can create the new generation of newts to creep in the night.

Yawning widely, showing his gooey gums, he dropped into the gloopy mud. ‘Yuck’ Teddy whispered to himself as the sludge dripped off his webbed feet. Teddy had to be quiet, the hunters of the day could still be waiting and Teddy would be a quick snack for any creature.

Slowly slurping through the ooze, Teddy stopped. He had stepped on something oddly hard. He looked at the ground under his wiggly toes. This was something new, something different. Teddy was used to things changing before and after his long winter nap, but not like this. Where there was once tall wavy grass and high swirling bushes, a dark hard desert now stretched over the ground. But Teddy did not think much of it, he had a pond to find. He took a step forward. ‘ZOOM!’ a sudden speed caused Teddy's to cower his face within his shoulders. ‘What was that?!’ He squealed. Large loud dirty four short legged beasts were smashed past in both ways. Their feet, sounding of thunder, tore through any bird song left in the dusk and in each passing took Teddy’s breath away. Making him ‘cough, cough… spla’. He tried to move forward, but another would roar past pushing him back, marking its land.

‘This was not here before, how can I get past?’

Teddy looked at the many new things around him. Large square leaves rustled in the light breeze but did not break like normal under his foot. Several short stubby twigs, which smelled burnt and toxic, sprouted near two smelly crumpled stones with tiny sharp-edged openings. As Teddy looked at these a noisy hollow rattle swirled over his head. Swinging around he saw an almost see-through log slap to a halt.
