The Necromancer's Bargain
SHYAM SATHISH
Chapter 1: The Siege
Bukhara was a bustling city on the Silk Road, a hub of commerce and culture for centuries. But on this day, it was surrounded by the largest army the world had ever seen. The great army of Genghis Khan had swept across the steppes of Asia, conquering all in its path. And now, it had come to Bukhara.
The city was not heavily fortified, with just a moat and a single wall separating the citizens from the tens of thousands of soldiers preparing for siege. The people of Bukhara knew what awaited them if they resisted - execution for all who fought, and either military conscription or enslavement for the rest.
One man, a skilled necromancer by the name of Suleiman, knew that he had to act quickly if he wanted to save the city. He went to the city leaders and convinced them to allow him to negotiate peace on their behalf. They agreed, knowing that he was their best chance for survival.
Suleiman walked towards the Mongolians' camp, nervous but determined. He had a plan, but he knew it was a dangerous gamble.
When he entered the white tent that had been set up that morning, he was surprised to see Genghis Khan himself waiting for him, along with a bevy of advisors. At first, Suleiman pleaded for mercy from the emperor, yielding nothing but disdain and laughter. After being dismissed as nothing more than a stalling tactic, he decided to reveal what he had to offer in return.
Closing his eyes, he took a dead mouse from his pocket, cupped it in his hands, and began to chant. The Mongolian court grew angry and impatient, thinking this was a waste of time. But Suleiman remained calm and focused. When he opened his hands, the mouse had turned to dust. Out of nowhere, a shadowy figure appeared beside him holding a sword and shield.
Genghis Khan quickly grabbed his nearby mace, but Suleiman told him that this was just a mere demonstration of his power. He explained that he was a necromantic conjurer who could turn the dead into whatever he wished, including soldiers. All he needed were the recently deceased to perform his work.
The shadowy figure soon disappeared due to the small lifeforce that the mouse provided, but that was all Genghis Khan needed to see. He agreed to spare Bukhara in return for Suleiman's services during the siege of Samarkand, where he would create an army of invincible soldiers from the corpses of Genghis Khan's slain enemies.
As Suleiman walked back to the city, he knew he had made a dangerous deal. He had saved Bukhara, but he had also made himself a pawn in Genghis Khan's ruthless conquest of the world. Suleiman had to be careful - he needed to find a way to escape from the Mongolians' grasp and save his own life.
