In the past, since work absorbed much of my day, I could only devote myself to my seedlings occasionally. It was a hobby largely related to my "vice" to sow everything that happened to me in the field. Peppers, medlar, lemons etc. They all followed the same process. I took the core or the seed on duty, I went to the terrace and, in the first pot available, I made a hole and the game was done. After some time I had the surprise to discover the birth of a new plant. The problem was then to understand what plant it was because I no longer remembered what I had sown in the pots. One day chatting with the manager of the company where I worked, the speech slipped on the roses and I discovered that, in the garden of his villa in Umbria, he had beautiful roses. I asked him to give me some cuttings and when the time came, he brought me several. In a very superfcial way I planted them and, with much luck, many of them sprouted and forironed. The satisfaction was enormous but, when winter arrived, I decided to transplant them in the park where I reside. The well-tended plants have grown giving rise to large coloured flowerbeds. After a few years I had the opportunity to close my working relationship and, given the stress I had accumulated for too many responsibilities due to my role in the company, I decided to take advantage of it. Once free from commitments I realized that I had to "detox" and that it was time to find a hobby to devote myself to.When I was young despite having a passion for painting and photography, because of the lack of time for the many tasks, I had always postponed. I enrolled in a painting course and bought a new camera. After a few months I realized that was not what I was looking for.To cheat time I took long walks. One morning when I was in a big mall I saw a lemon plant, I liked it and I bought it. To cure her well I started to look at the tutorials on Youtube.Among the various films available I found several that also spoke of roses. Among these I was intrigued by a video of Nicola Cavina, a well-known nurseryman in Florence who explained how to sow roses. The technique he used seemed quite simple. I tried to ask the gardener of the park where I live and some nurseries in the area but the answers were not positive. Everyone agreed that seeding was very difficult. Also because the best result I could have achieved would have been a "wild" rose with a simple flower with 5 petals. That meant I had to graft them on later.I decided to buy two climbing roses from Nino Sanremo. Within a few months they became very big and gave me abundant blooms especially the Red Flame. On Facebook I found some groups talking about roses and, after joining some of them, I made friends with Marco Baldizzone a true expert in sowing and hybridization. His knowledge of the subject transpired from the speeches he made in the group.Marco suggested that I buy Domenico Aicardi’s book "Le Rose" which treated the world of roses in a complete way. I listened to his advice and bought the book on the Internet. A few days later he arrived and I immediately read the chapter that interested me. Finally I had clearer ideas. Now that I felt ready I had to overcome the first problem. I didn’t know where to get the seeds. After several evenings, in which Marco urged me to try, he offered to send me the seeds for free. I accepted and after three days the seeds were at my house. At that point I just had to start because I knew I could count on Marco’s experience, his knowledge and his precious suggestions.Today I can say it was worth it. Sowing roses is a good experience because the plants that are born are first and foremost unique roses, the result of the genetic combination that occurred following pollination. And then, after all, you know that you were the author of the birth of a plant that will donate many holes. Those born of seed, are different from the others because they are only yours. Seeding is the first step towards the reproduction of roses. If you want, you can try the hybridization choosing the roses to cross, choosing the perfume, the reflowering, and the resistance to the diseases. In order to try the hybridization it is opportune to read and to educate on the genetics and the types of roses to cross. Those who have never sown roses do not know what is the satisfaction that you feel for having succeeded. And the roses that will be born will be, for those who sowed them, the most beautiful of their green corner. For the artisan sower creating an exposure rose is very often linked to the blindfold goddess. This is the hope that drives those who enjoy sowing.Sowing roses is like all those things, once tried, after you can no longer do without because they are a continuous discovery. Those purchased in the nursery have a certain charm but they are always the clone of a plant that they possess in many. On the various social groups are constantly posted photos of roses competing on who has the Pierre de Ronsard, the Botero or the most beautiful Edith Piaf. Rose sellers always repeat the same varieties. The sowing does not take from a rose already present but creates a new rose that, when it grows, will be stronger than the others obtained from cutting. Try to believe. Finally, I would like to apologise for any discourses that might be difficult to understand because I personally translated the text into English using my previous school experiences.
Chapter 1: The rose hips
The roses are classified in three large groups : The wild, the ancient and the modern. They can be climbers and shrubs. The ancient roses, besides being characterized by strong perfumes, are plants resistant to diseases, with a remarkable growth but with only one flowering. Modern roses, on the other hand, are very refreshing and generally little perfumed. In the rose the flower is equipped with organs for the reproduction both male and female. Therefore, the fecundation can take place for: self-pollination, procured by the insects that rub after having transported the pollen from another rose, or by the pollen carried by the wind (anemophilous fecundation). There is also the possibility that a rose can reproduce without the aid of male intervention. This phenomenon takes the name of apogamy.Once fertilized the rose after being exhausted will have the receptacle that will begin to grow just as it happens in the pregnant woman. This swelling is a sign that the dog is forming. In its interior there are its yellow or brown fruits (achenes), which, in order to ripen, need 14 weeks of gestation. Only when the cinorrodo from the initial green will become red or brown can be used. The first flowering is the most important to seed a rose. The cinorrodi born from the flowering of May to October will be ready for the sowing. If you are not lucky enough to have roses that have gone to seed, there are two solutions. In September you can find them outside supermarkets in public gardens and uninhabited villas. For those who do not want to move, you can buy them at specialized nurseries.Besides you have seeds that Marco had given me I bought others from the nursery Garden Museum of the Ancient Rose of Montagnana MO website http://www.museoroseantiche.it. The owner Mr. Riccardo Viti is a competent person, very courteous and helpful. If you turn to him you can ask what seeds are ready or, if it is the first time you sow, it is better to rely directly on him for the choice. If instead you go to meet purchases made on the web you just throw money and time. On Amazon are on sale pink seed sachets that will never sprout. And most likely those sold are not even rose seeds. Very often these are Chinese websites that advertise the article with photoshopped photos in absurd colors. So do not let those who disappoint you and frustrate your attempts to sow.For those who live in the north it is easier to find the dogs because the plants of roses are more common in the gardens and in the communities. In the south they are not found because the green has to deal with the cement. I read that up north there are nurseries that reproduce roses by cutting from plants found in uninhabited houses. With a bit of luck in September you can also find dogs. The first sowing will be carried out and the sooner the new seedlings will be born. Sowing in outdoor pots requires less assistance. The real enemy of the new born is mainly the bad white due to temperature changes or stagnant water. It’s necessary to protect them with wettable sulfur. The seeds of Sevillana that Marco Baldizzone gave me, planted in November, germinated punctually in early March. The seedlings, which came from the same period, all had different colors. Even the red roses had different shades. So the same mom gave birth to different leaves. Some have shown themselves to be very strong and resistant to diseases, while others, after flowering, have died. The advice of Aicardi is to cut the first fore if you want the plant to have a flourishing growth. The production of the flower stresses the plant and, if it does not have sufficient strength, it is probably destined to die.Only the strongest remain.
