The Shop may be found in the city. It squats low between two old buildings, but it's far older than both of them put together. Its facade is currently brick, though it has had others in the past.
You reach the entrance by going down a set of three cement steps. There's no handrail, so you must keep your balance. The steps aren't too deep, though, so not many people lose their balance. Not on the way in, at least.
The front door is plain wood, a bit weathered, perhaps, but solid. It's sturdy enough to keep out what I want to keep out, even without a lock. Just as important, it keeps in what I want to keep in.
There's no sign on the door. People either know what the Shop is, or they don't--and if they don't, no small sign is going to explain it to them. There are no street numbers, either. The Shop receives no mail, and postal carriers simply pass it by without a thought.
There's a large window in the front, to let in light. The glass is theoretically clear, but it's dusty and grimy enough to keep prying eyes from looking inside. It's not that I want to discourage clients--that would defeat the whole purpose, after all--but I find a certain amount of privacy adds to the Shop's air of mystery. Besides, I don't have to discourage clients. They often discourage themselves.
No, despite these minor obstacles, the Shop is not hard to find if you're looking for it--and really want to find it.
It was in Suva that a man came into the Shop. He was conventionally dressed in a conservative suit, but his black skin revealed him as one of the local Melanesian islanders.
