Asiul overcomes his creative block by leaving the time in which he lives and awakening in a future that he hopes will inspire the writing of his novel. What he finds is a world where everyone is faced with an existential choice that involves a limited number of alternative possibilities. A choice in which one's future depends on a self-assessment of one's own essence. One of the central themes of the novel is the speculation on the future of Neuropsychoart. It had been five years since Asiul his unproductivity began. He searched in vain for the words on the tip of his tongue, but it was as if a curse prevented him from finding even the slightest trace of them. Nonetheless, not a day went by without him, disheartened, sitting in front of the computer and staring at the blinking cursor on Word. It had become a ritual, or rather, an automatism. He knew that he would not be able to give a conclusion to the many stories that he had brought to life and that he had intertwined with each other, but every day he sat in front of his story, he stared at the bright computer screen, but he did not write, he knew that he would delete everything and erasing made his block real. Every now and then he seemed to find hope again and then he tried to feed himself with ideas, sometimes looking out the window and analyzing the moving world, other times typing random words on the internet, but more often than not after the first more or less careful readings, he skipped from one document to another without giving himself time to evaluate them, thus turning his search into a senseless compulsion.
For years that novel had been his only true purpose, every event had been a source of inspiration for him, travel, new meetings, any other event. The more time passed, however, the more his dedication led him to isolate himself: he slowly and unconsciously abandoned the things that fueled his creativity, while the memories of his existence began to fade. At first it was good, he was more concentrated, the words seemed to take off on the keyboard, he wrote all day and a good part of the night, but obviously, having given up everything that set fire to his creativity, he found himself a victim of its spell.
One morning, however, during one of his alienated searches, his anesthetized curiosity surprised him, pushing him to click on the icon of a video under which it was written:
Live your best future with cryopreservation: Alcom offers you a peaceful and completely safe experience.
In the video a woman spoke with a reassuring voice, explaining what services were offered by Alcom and the advantages of cryopreservation:
-Lives that are considered irretrievably over today can certainly be restored in the future. At Alcom we have so far been concerned with preserving the lifeless organisms of our customers in the best possible conditions to facilitate the work of doctors of a future that is perhaps not far away; but from today on we are also allowed to offer our services to those who wish to be cryopreserved while alive, to wake up in a future world in the best possible state of health. -
As Asiul listened to the documentary, he thought the Alcom experience could provide his life with purpose and his writing with something worth telling.
For the first time in five years, Asiul moved without hesitation, sending the forms required to take part in an informational tour that would take place a few days later, right at the Alcom headquarters. He was determined to learn as much as possible about cryopreservation, convinced as he was that it would be the biggest turning point in his life, not just his creative life. A confirmation email arrived a few hours later, he felt the blood flowing through his veins, feeling hot and cold at the same time, an exhilaration that he didn't remember having experienced with that intensity before then. He left two days later, not thinking about the trip, but focused exclusively on that newfound sensation. When he reached the Alcom headquarters he was seated in an elegant aseptic room where six people were waiting, shortly after another four arrived who, like him, had agreed on an information appointment with the company.
Their guide didn't have to wait long: it was the director of Alcom, a middle-aged man with a very wellgroomed appearance and very kind manners, who after introducing himself and shaking hands with all the visitors said:
- I am delighted to inform you that you are on the list of the first people in excellent health who are considering the possibility of benefiting from the repeal of the law that allowed us to cryopreserve our clients only after their death. Allow me therefore, without further preamble, to show you the various phases of our treatment. Please follow me. -
The director led them to a room that reminded Asiul a lot of a dentist's office, but in which he didn't feel the same agitation. In the center of the room there was a white bed, like most of the furniture he had seen up to that moment; always white shelves covered two sides of the room, and were filled on the right by some mechanical devices that Asiul could not identify and on the left by an infinite number of bottles, bottles and vials, all meticulously labeled. At the bottom, however, lived what seemed to Asiul to be a large aquarium but which however did not contain any aquatic creatures. When everyone had entered the room the director spoke again:
-This is the roomwhere total anesthesia of clients is carried out. In this room, after anesthesia, the administration of various drugs follows: anticoagulants, stabilizers of cell membranes, inhibitors of edema processes, drugs to maintain blood pressure at an optimal level, drugs that prevent free radicals from causing damage, reducers of cerebral metabolism, shiver inhibitors, broad-spectrum antibiotics and gastric protectors.
In this tank, however, the patient is placed with thermoprobes and then cooled down using a spray, crushed ice and fluorocarbon, administered via the lungs, at a temperature of 0 degrees centigrade. Meanwhile, the cardiopulmonary machine you see here constantly maintains cardiorespiratory functions. Then more fluorocarbon is administered and when the naso-oro-pharyngeal temperature drops to around 15 degrees, after incision of the vein and femoral artery, with an open circuit pump, all the blood is drained and the circulatory system is washed with 15 liters of a special saline solution pre-cooled to 0 degrees. Then the patient is transferred to the adjacent room. -
