Beschreibung

Who was the Zodiac Killer? Was he just a rogue madman or a sadistic man who was of a sound criminal mind? What if he was something else entirely? Time has muddied the waters, kept the pain alive and shrouded all in a dark fog. Only a thin line keeps the cyphers connected. We need to follow it to go further and find new ways to uncover surprising and unexpected truths. Paolo Gennari is an Italian entrepreneur born in the 70s, passionate about riddles and mysteries. He tackled the Zodiac cyphers using logic and his analysis and cryptographic skills. The result is a new and unusual reconstruction of the crimes that shocked California during the 60s and 70s.

PART 1

"Hope has two beautiful daughters.

Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things is, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are."

(St. Augustine)

CHAPTER 1 - HINTS OF STORIES

Of all the US states, California is certainly among those best known for its cities, coasts, the world of cinema and television and the advanced technological and cultural level.

A garden of Eden for visitors and tourists was nevertheless shocked, during 1960s / 70s, by a series of brutal and heinous murders, by a serial killer.

He murdered without a criterion never in the same ways or in the same places.

The murders attributed him were 5, even if a higher number of victims is assumed.

Obsessed with making people talk about himself, making himself known in the media and provoking the police, he sent a series of letters to the press up to 1974, with threats, absurd messages, games and cryptograms.

He called himself "Zodiac" and used this symbol as a logo and signature.

Some of his cryptograms remained unsolved for a long time.

In the following pages I tried to list in chronological order news, documents and useful material to have a smattering and a general historical picture.

Although some of this information is less known and may seem irrelevant, were useful confirmations of my decryption of cryptograms and the result of my analysis.

I tried to be as precise as possible, I apologize for any mistakes ...

June 4,1963

On a typical and traditional holiday for American schools (Senior Ditch Day), a couple went to Gaviota Beach, near Lompoc, County of Santa Barbara (CA).

Not having returned for the night, the following morning, their disappearance was reported.

During the first searches a friend remembered their desire to spend the day on that beach, so the searches focused on that location.

It was only after some time that a police officer, stumbling upon a shack, discovered in it the lifeless bodies of Robert Domingos (18) and Linda Edwards (17).

Following an examination of the crime scene, investigators believed the murderer had forced Linda to tie up Robert, possibly by threatening her with a weapon.

Also, according to the forensic reconstruction, Robert managed to free himself while Linda was tied up by the attacker, engaged in a fight with him, and then fled with her partner.

It was at this point that the killer shot them in the back. Struck, they fell to the ground while the attacker continued to fire on them even at close range.

After the execution, the killer dragged the bodies into the shack and tore off Linda's bathing suit.

However, a later examination established that the woman was not subjected to sexual violence.

Before escaping, the killer attempted to set fire to the shack, but was unsuccessful, thus leaving several clues: ropes, .22 calibre ammunition and some matches.

Linda Edwards and Robert Domingos planned to get married in November of that year.

October 30,1966

Cheri Josephine Bates, 18, studied at Riverside City College (RCC) and worked part-time at Riverside National Bank.

In the early afternoon of October 30, 1966, the girl decided to go study and work on a project in the library.

According to many witnesses, Cheri studied until 21:00.

A girl testified to investigators that a man (20-year-old - about 1,80m tall) was hiding across the street from Cheri's vehicle and staring in the direction of her car around the closing time of the library.

Although this witness did not know him, it seems that Cheri knew him and exchanged a few words with him.

Cheri's father waited all night for her daughter to return before filing a missing person report to the Riverside police.

At around 6:28 am on October 31, a gardener discovered Cheri's body.

Cheri was found prone (face down) on a gravel path between two unoccupied houses on Terracina Drive.

Her clothes were intact but soaked in blood.

She was repeatedly stabbed in the chest and left shoulder, and she also presented deep stab wounds to the face and neck.

At a short distance from her, detectives discovered a Timex brand wristwatch along with the footprint of a shoe made by the Leavenworth prisoners, a kind of shoe sold exclusively in military stores.

Although she was only 1.60m tall, Cheri was an athletic girl and must have found the strength to resist the assault: both a crime scene examination and subsequent autopsy revealed evidence of a fierce physical struggle against her killer.

She certainly managed to scratch the attacker, (many fragments of skin and brown hair were found under the fingernails of her right hand), as well as snatching his wristwatch.

The girl's car ignition wiring had been tampered with, the ignition key was in her place and the windows partially rolled down.

Several greasy and smeared fingerprints were found on the vehicle.

The investigators established that these prints did not belong to the girl, to her friends or relatives of hers and were therefore of her murderer.

It was not sexual assault or robbery.

Her past was crystal clear: no events were found that could motivate the murder or forms of retaliation and revenge.

At first the police did not consider Cheri a victim of the Zodiac: a possible connection came to light following a tip- off four years later.

November 29,1966

In some typewritten letters sent to the police and the local Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper, Cheri's homicide was claimed with details not disclosed to public. The author of the letters threatened further murders.

December 1966

Sometime after Cheri's murder, a macabre poem was discovered engraved on the lower level of a desk in the college warehouse.
