When you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
(Sherlock Holmes)
In the sitting room on the first floor of 221B Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are sitting in armchairs on either side of the fireplace. No fire is burning in the grate, as the weather is warm on this day, June 30th, 1895. Watson is immersed in The Times; Holmes is filling his pipe while he leafs through a book about poisonous plants. Although mild air is wafting in through the open window, the room smells of toast and kippers, as Mrs Hudson has not yet cleared the breakfast table. From the street can be heard the cries of carriage drivers, the clip-clop of horses’ hooves and the twittering of birds. Suddenly there is a loud knocking on the front door below. Holmes rises quickly from his armchair and looks out of the window.
