Investing can be overwhelming for beginners because it is a really wide field. There are different types of investments to make and a lot to learn. Even seasoned investors are continually honing their skills to stay on top of the market. But not to worry! That’s because this book will teach you what you need to know as a beginner.
One of the biggest shortcomings of our educational system is the lack of financial education. Most people go through high school and even college without learning a thing about finances or investments. And they end up being workers who live from paycheck to paycheck. They never attain financial freedom.
In the world today, only a tiny percentage of people will attain financial freedom without investing. And these are mostly people who inherited a lump sum of money. For the average person, if they’re ever going to be financially independent, they have to invest their money.
You see, if you aim to retire early or be financially independent, you have to work round the clock to make money. But that is physically impossible. And that is where investing comes in. Investing is simply making your money work for you. Your money doesn’t need to rest, and it doesn’t go on leave or vacation; it just works. And oftentimes, it earns more than you do in your everyday job.
So, I’m sure that by now, we have established the fact that investing is the path to financial freedom. The next thing is getting the knowledge to make profitable investments. And the first step to doing that is to know the investment options you have. That is what this book aims to teach you.
In this book, we are going to look at the terminologies you need to know before delving into the world of investments. Then we will go through the different types of investments you can make and an in-depth explanation of each of them. Where possible, we will teach you how to make money from these investments. By the time you are done reading this book, you should know the types of investments you would like to put your money into and what it entails.
In the first chapter, we will be doing a brief introduction to investing. Keep reading to take a step closer to your financial goals!
Not many people will stumble into financial freedom. For most people, they have to work, save, and invest. Note that it doesn’t stop at just working. Because in actual reality, just working and earning a good income doesn’t guarantee you financial freedom. You have to make your money work for you by investing.
The concept of saving is generally understood. You save money in a savings account, and you earn a return at a fixed rate with very minimal risk. Investing, on the other hand, requires that you commit your funds with the prospect of achieving your financial goals while taking a higher level of risk. Again, it’s all about making your money work for you.
Investing, while rewarding, can often be difficult and perplexing. Understanding the basics of effective investing is the cornerstone of reaching your financial goals, whether you want a new house, money for your children’s education, or financial freedom. Attaining these objectives should not be a matter of chance. To make sure that you hit your goals, it takes dedication, investigation, and patience. And, as with other things, you should prepare ahead of time.
Before we get started on the different investment options, let’s go through a few basic terms you need to know before investing.
Asset Allocation
Any investment that has the potential to generate a profit, such as a stock, bond, ETF, mutual fund, real estate, and so on, is considered an asset. The concept of balancing your investments to reduce risk is known as asset allocation. This is accomplished by diversifying your portfolio with various types of assets that optimize profit while minimizing risk.
Ask/Bid
The price of an asset is sometimes expressed as a “Bid/Ask” format. A buyer’s “Bid” is the greatest amount he or she is willing to pay for an asset. The “Ask” is the lowest price for an asset that a seller is willing to accept.
