Some time ago I asked a friend: “Are you happy?” The answer I received was: “No, absolutely not!” I tried to repeat the same question several times, and I always got the same answer. I realized that the people around me, my family, my friends, my co-workers, are afflicted with great sadness.
I also tried to change the question, phrasing it like this: “What would make you happy?” Again the answer was disappointing: “Honestly, I don’t know!” Summing up my short survey, I came to the conclusion that more and more people are unhappy and have no idea what might make them happy. Therefore, they are totally unable to achieve happiness.
Until a few years ago, I too was in the same condition. I had given up on finding my happiness, resigned to living a stressful life between work and family commitments. Then, quite by accident, I came across a Buddhist saying, and a light bulb went on inside my head. Fortunately, I am a curious person and so I started reading various books about Buddhist teaching. Buddhism is a religion, but also a philosophy and a doctrine of life. You don’t have to become a Buddhist monk to experience some of the core teachings of this millennial doctrine.
Today I continue to be a typical western guy doing a typical western life, but I can finally say: “I’m happy!” For this reason I have decided to share, in this short manuscript, some of the most important teachings that have helped me to find happiness. It was a long and sometimes difficult search, but at a certain point the change came, just when I didn’t expect it: dawn finally arrived, and I woke up on a beautiful sunny day!
I wish everyone a pleasant reading, without pretending to teach anything, but with the hope that some thoughts written in this book could help you to be happier.
A man asked Buddha, “I want Happiness.” Buddha said, First remove “I”, that’s Ego, then remove “want”, that’s Desire. See now you are left with only “Happiness.”
(Buddhism)
Happiness is not having the best of everything you want. It is making the best of everything you’ve got.
(Buddhism)
Sometimes, the best thing you can do is not think, not wonder, not imagine, not obsess. Just breathe, and have faith that everything will work out for the best.
(Buddhism)
Set your heart just on doing good. Do good over and over again and you will be filled with joy.
(Buddhism)
Don’t allow yourself to wake up with yesterday’s issues troubling your mind. Refuse to live backwards but see every day as a new chapter.
(Buddhism)
Don’t stress yourself too much, because no matter how bad the situation is. It will change.
(Buddhism)
If you want to, you can find a million reasons to hate life and be angry at the world. Or, if you want to, you could find a million reasons to love life and be happy. Choose wisely.
(Cari Welsh)
Attachment is the very opposite of love. Love says: “I want you to be happy.” Attachment says: “I want you to make me happy.”
(Tenzin Palmo)
Everything is temporary, emotions, thoughts, people, scenery. Do not be attached, just flow with it.
(Buddhism)
I stopped waiting for the world to give me what I wanted. I started giving it to myself.
(Byron Katie)
