What is a lycanthrope, and why should we bother thinking about this subject. Well, I ascertain, that it should be important to find out whether this phenomenon, which has been inducted into the collective human psyche for ages. Whether or not we want to believe if someone can change into a lycanthrope or not is not the question –– let alone a valid argument to refute the possibility of it being possible. I don't want to plead for the existence of these creatures or so-called cursed individuals; I just want to list the evidence, which is out there if you are prepared to look at it.
But before I want to tell you something about my personal experience with a lycanthrope, I would like to explain the origin of the word "lycanthrope." Lycanthrope is a compound word that consists of two words. The words are "lykos" and "Anthropos." The word lykos is the Greek word for wolf and Anthropos the word for man. This implies that a lycanthrope is a greek term for a werewolf, which also means man and wolf because the word "was" is an old germanic word for man. This word can interestingly enough to be compared to the Latin word "vir," which is related to the word "were."
One of the first historical stories that mentioned and thematized the lycanthrope was the story "A roman werewolf," written by Petronius, who called it a "vermicelli", which translates as shape-shifter –– a term, that can also be used for other phenomena albeit very similar. Then there is an account about a lycanthrope in the otia imperial written by Gervase of Tilbury, who mentioned a man by the name of Chaucevaire, whom he believed to have suffered from lycanthropy. Then there were the trials against supposed werewolves in Switzerland in the regions of Valais and Vaud, which in my humble view indicate, that the existence of such beings is quite likely.
