Epilogue

It's funny how it always seems to rain when you feel sad, How it always seems to fire lighting and thunder down to the Earth in rage when you feel angry, How suddenly time seems to pass us by when we know we have none to waste...

My Name is Mary-Allen Song, and this is my story.

Chapter 1

I can feel the cold floor through my shoes, I can hear children crying and people coughing in the distance, yet everything seems so quiet. The huge knob in my throat slides down and back up every time I swallow, cold burning in my chest every time I take a breath, a chilled droplet of sweat clinging to my brow, my body frozen in place as I wait... And wait.

“Miss Song.”

I hear the nurse calling my name, I'm not sure, should I stand up? Raise my hand? I don't know.

I slowly raise my head and met her eyes, The nurse seems so hard, Pale skin and dark eyes, but within those eyes, I could see someone who actually cares, someone who took this job because she loves doing it, someone who cares about the people who sit here with me this day. Her cold hand tapping my shoulder lightly, then she motions for me to follow her with a twitch of her chin.

“You look tired.” The nurse said as she holds a door open for me. I look at the silver name plate on the door that reads “Dr. Shmitau”, I shake my head trying to shake the odd heaviness inside of my skull.

“I haven't been sleeping well Nurse, I just can't sleep with these sharp pains in my chest.”

I said holding my hand to my chest, closing it into a fist as another sharp pin rams my heart.

“Has it been getting worse?” She said still holding the door open.

“No, but their constant.” I replied slowly slipping past her into the room.

“Well, it's probably just a little lung infection, the doctor will be here in a minute. Just take a seat and I’ll call him.” The nurse said pointing at the chair-bed the doctor usually uses to check out his patients.

“Thank you.” I said, almost a whisper as she shuts the door.

It's a bit warmer in here, my eyes gazing around the room, I noticed these little posters of inspiration on the wall, one was with a kitten clinging to a branch saying “Hang in there.” I stifled an escaping giggle as I cleared my mind of all the lolcats images I used to love looking up on the internet, and laid back against the wall.

“Miss Song?”

I jumped up and lost my train of thought, I didn't even hear the doctor come in.

“Yes, uh, Hello doctor.”

“Nurse Jamie says you haven't been feeling too well since the last time we met, Has the cramps settled?” He asked peering over his glasses at a file he was carrying.

“Yes doctor.”

I said as I cleared my throat, I've suddenly tensed up and my chest feels tight, but I 'manned up' and continued, “But that's not why I'm here. I haven't been sleeping lately and I feel these odd little pricks in my chest. I'm not sure if it's just from the cold or if it's my midnight smoking sessions, but I just want to know how to stop it.”
