ON THE RUN
When one leads the journey with courage, rivers pave way.
Following the death of her husband, Maya thought that she was destined to live all alone in darkness and sorrow, but all that she thought changed when the man who was partly responsible for her husband’s demise takes her in as family, giving her a reason to live again.
The coming of a new born brought a lot of excitement and new expectations. A lot of joy followed her arrival but also along came pain’ anxiety and confusion as Maya and the child mysteriously disappear without a trace.
Alone in an unknown world full of creatures foreign to feelings of pain and sorrow for others, Maya will fight to survive and save the new born baby Angelica from her alien abductors, saving the whole world from a tragedy, and at the same time restore harmony at the Fong residence.
Holding her delicately by the hand, leading her through the beautiful green healthy-looking garden harboring angelic flowers that soothe the mind and the spirit, she looked at her and smiled. Her companion seemed happy and relaxed, relieved from stress. With three months to birth, she needed all the rest she could get both physically and emotionally.
Settling down on the mat laid to the ground, the natural scent of the earth refreshed her spirit and peace settled in to the depth of her mind. In the mid of the quietness of the moment, she felt more alive than ever before.
Many wild things had ran through her chaotic mind a few months ago but the maternity leave had done her a lot of good than she had ever imagined. Before, despite her heaviness, she had insisted on keeping up her work in the office, pacing from one table to another and one office to the other, picking up one project to another, her mind found no rest. Rosalyn held her work with such high regard that she forgot to have a life for herself, but a time came when it was no longer about her but the little lady growing in her womb.
‘’ Before I prayed to put to birth soon so that I may have my freedom of rushing back to work, never did I know that I would find peace in sitting just here,’’ she said to the lady next to her, amidst laughter.
‘’ There is peace in doing the simple things in life and having a peace of mind, it’s very important for your baby,’’ Maya replied.
At five months, Maya was brought to take care of the baby who was still safely kept within the holds of the mother. She had taken firm responsibility to nurse the baby even when it was still with the mom, but with great difficult. The mom being the busy focused workaholic, she spared no time for rest until the time nature put such pressure on her that she chose to give it a break.
Running a multi-billion company was never a walk in the park, and she knew it. Rosalyn afforded not missing any meeting or presentations, more so the one she was having at that time. One of their major shareholders was threatening to with draw his shares after the outburst of a fraud case that had occurred within the company, he preferred to work with more transparent people than the Fongs.
But she knew better than anyone how much the company meant to them, they had to work hard to see that they save it. For the past years, they had been faced with challenges but fraud was never among it. They had their short comings but the Fongs were one that respected people and led their company with honor and transparency.
The pressure and stress seemed to be unexceptionally great, she felt heat rising up in her body and sweat flowing down her spine, discomfort seemed to pile up rather very fast than before. Rosalyn kept count of time by the tape of her pen against her table but everything seemed like eternity, until when she felt her head spinning around like a drunkard followed by great hammering and the sharp pain in her abdomen before collapsing from her seat to the ground. She saw faces surround her and voices calling her name but her throat felt clogged and was unable to speak. In a mirage, she saw shaking hands before a sharp light cut through her eyes and total darkness took over.
‘’Doctor, how is my wife and the baby doing,’’ the impatient voice of Mr. James Fong sounded.
Shock spread through his whole being, making every part of him tremble. His eyes had turned red from tear shedding and his wavy hair that touched his neck had carelessly fallen out of place. His clothes had been shed with blood but seemed to be unaware of the dirt that was around him or he didn’t care. What was most important for him was lying down, on the hospital bed and struggling with life. He wished to fight with them, and win the battle, or if not fight for them but he just didn’t know how. The doctor’s silence almost ripped the heart out of his chest.
‘’Please doctor how….?’’ he earnestly asked again, anxiety welling up in his body at a break neck speed.
‘’ They are okay, however to avoid repeating this, the lady needs a lot of rest,’’ the doctor pressed.
He closed his eyes and breathed deep, letting the anxiety and fear that had been building up to cool down. At some point he thought he would have died. He let both his hands rake carelessly through his hair before collapsing on to his knees to the ground. James prayed to God even though he knew he wasn’t good at it and had taken pretty long to do so, he wasn’t sure whether the almighty would listen to him but all the same, he did it, to save his life, for his wife and only child had his breath in their hands. He had taken pretty long to pray but better late than never, he had come back home, with a broken heart and a strong prayer. Before he thought his multi billion company meant the world to him but how wrong he were. He had taken for granted the most precious gift the universe had ever give him, and he swore if granted another opportunity he will not to repeat the error. He made extra effort to convince the lady to break off from work for a while.
She had since then taken time off from work, spent a lot of it taking care of herself like the way Mr. Fong wished, an activity she had forsaken. Rosalyn needed company and who better than Maya who worked tooth and nail to care for the tiny little thing growing inside of her belly. All these thoughts crossed her mind while she sat enjoying the beauty of the setting sun as it fell far behind the mountains in the west, waiting for her husband to return from work. Watching the rays of the disappearing sun as they kissed the sky made such a magnificent view that she finally understood the true meaning of art.
‘’Isn’t it beautiful?’’ she whispered to Maya.
‘’It is indeed, the Lord’s touch is always splendid where ever it lies, nature not to mention,’’ she replied with a beautiful smile crossing her lips.
She was enjoying the beauty of the evening, besides Maya, when she felt something like a tiny feeling deep inside her heart, and she then knew that someone was watching her, she turned her head, with her eyes glimmering with joy and expectation and wasn’t disappointed.
Her dark brown eyes landed on the 1.4m figure wonderfully clad in a navy blue suit one he considered to encapsulate all his lucky charms, and then she knew that they day was good for him. It was gifted to him by his late grandmother when we had turned thirty, this he held very dear. His bright eyes sparkled as the evening light rays went through them, and his white teeth made a beautiful wild smile that made her heart sing whenever he smiled.
They stared into each other immensely before he approached her and they seemed to find greater peace and solace in each other’s eyes. After what seemed like forever, he bridged the distance between them as he carelessly moved towards her, he held her by the shoulder and gave her a smooth press. She smiled to herself and her eyes did what they do most, blushing before him.
‘’ Welcome back,’’ she said.
He folded his muscles to reach to where she was seated and gave her a warm peck. These are the little things he had missed before his wife chose to settle down at home and care for the pregnancy. It felt like a home once again, not a place of escape to go rest as you wait for night to fall.
‘’Thanks love,’’ he replied touching her cheek gently with his fingertips.
In what seemed like a struck of lightening, Maya excused herself, rushed into the house to prepare what might be of need later in the night, moving from one room to another as if she was awaiting a bride.
Slowly he settled down next to his better half, and as she lay her head by his shoulder, he knew that at that moment, he got everything he had ever wanted in life. He had been a billionaire, and could afford all the luxuries the world could offer but one who is childless, with no one to spoil with all the fancy thing life offers. His life had been empty and the marriage was falling apart, but like not all hope was always lost, along came a miracle, something that redeemed his whole life, and made him smile once again. He worked twice as hard as since then because he had found something to share what ever good things he would get and his hard work would ever go to waste. They enjoyed the rest of the evening in mild quietness and the coolness of the evening, in each other’s embrace.
Putting off the lights, she slid into bed, thankful that another day had been scooped off her calendar, she could hardly wait to hold her child in her hands, the most precious thing life had bestowed upon her.
Staring into space, she wondered whether her child would look like her or she will be a complete stranger physically, or she would have her father’s looks. She wished they would share her features both, smiled and pulled the sheets over her shoulders, and soon she was lost a thousand miles into the dream land.
Morning came and it never forgot to show off its splendor, with the warm rays from the sun cutting through space and the brown curtains that hang over the glass wall, through the white sheets where she lay for the night, onto her skin caressing it tenderly, an act that woke her up from the beautiful night sleep. Though chilly, the night’s roughness was slowly melted away by the beauty of the morning sun. She opened her eyes to the gift a new day, stretching her arm, she reached for the calendar that lay on her bed side table, and along dragged a blue point ball pen tied to a lace, hanging from the calendar. She made one more mark and smiled, feeling refreshed and with all her strength got out of bed.
‘’Just a few more days,’’ she said while she laid her hand gently over her protruded belly.
The warm water was music to her ears, she could hardly recall when she had enjoyed a peaceful bath with no rush. Many times she had flew to the bathroom, and no sooner had she entered then she left. Jumping from one meeting to another, she hardly got time to rest. She recalled how her chaotic working style almost claimed her home. She almost forgot what it meant to show her husband some bit of care in the name of busy with work.
‘’ I hate this busy with work issue, don’t forget that you have a family,’’ James had told her, flames of fury burning in his eyes, as he slammed the door behind him.
Rosalyn giggled at the memory of her past acts, she saw how foolish she had been and regretted the time she had lost while putting pieces of papers together in office. An opportunity came in her life and along came a new light of seeing things and she was more than willing to conquer all of it, grasp and enjoy every moment of it.
It felt as if magic crossed from the other end of the world into her house and her heart, as a new born being she felt, and no one in this universe would tell her that this new beautiful thing was wrong. Perhaps it was the joy of being a mother that was keeping her mind busy, she thought as she threw the soap bubble off from her long hairy leg as she relaxed in the warmness of the tab water underneath.
Attiring in her best garment, she moved towards the door to enjoy what the rest of the day had in store, just for her. As she closed it behind her, she could have sworn that she had a small voice speak to her, if she didn’t have headphones in her ears. She felt that she wasn’t alone but the fact that she knew that she was practically alone at the second floor of the mansion assured her that maybe she was day dreaming. The small voices that spoke to her softly in whispers made her wonder what was really going on sometimes though most times she took them for granted.
Apart from Maya who dropped by the study room to drop her a snack or a glass of juice, check her body pressures or temperature, none of the households wandered around the house. They had with them a high degree of discipline, always remained resigned to their stations of work. This made her want to do some investigation work, and what better way than that to escape from the old book of Shake Spere she had been lost to the past few days.
