Readers who have been following my publications on Sherlock Holmes for some time will not be surprised to learn that my friend and colleague had already solved a number of cases before we met at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1881. But equally, they will know that Holmes was very reluctant to come forward with them. Whether this was because of his modesty or because, as he thought, they had not challenged his outstanding mind too much, I am still unable to describe. What is certain, however, is that in these rare moments he gave me a glimpse of his former self, which he otherwise tried to conceal through his aloofness.
