The sun painted the canvas of the sky with brilliant hues of orange, yellow, red and pink. The two girls strolled along the beach and hurled pebbles back into the sea.
Sandy said to Cathy,"Hey, look over there. It's an oyster." Cathy turned to peer at the greyish white bivalve mollusc sitting right in front of them.
Sandy curiously said, "I wonder whether there is a pearl inside it."
"I don't think so. "
"If there is one, who's gonna take it, you or me", Sandy teased her.
"We're going to share it between us. Like everything else."
" Let's forget it. Are you going to Joe's birthday party today?"
Cathy replied in a confident tone,"Well,if I don't go, wouldn't it spoil the fun? You're invited too. Why don't you come with me?"
"Sure, will do."
Sandy and Cathy were best friends, were like sisters. They were closely attached to each other. Often they went to the beach to sun-bathe and have a good time. They would unfurl their colorful beach umbrellas while sitting side by side and chat about their lives. They would both don the same polka dot bikinis and have fun while swimming.
At the advent of dusk, the two of them decided to go to Joe's birthday party. Joe was a common friend of theirs, and had invited cordially both of them to his party. The three of them were classmates in high school. Sandy wore a red, evening gown that made her look drop dead gorgeous. Cathy wore a low-cut dress that accentuated her voluptuous figure.
Sandy was a pretty girl with russet hair, hazel eyes and olive skin. Cathy was beautiful too. She was a blonde with blue eyes and a doll that guys would be pleased to fondle with. The two made a ravishing pair and when they walked every eye would be riveted to them.
The two had a rollicking time at the gathering. Joe goggled at the two charming beauties. Cathy took advantage of this and danced with him. There was something in her eyes that Joe could read. Sandy did not talk to Joe much. She was an introvert who was fond of books. She was a girl who took life seriously unlike the happy-go-lucky Cathy. Sandy used to get emotionally attached easily.
One day going by the nearby bookstore Sandy caught a glimpse of Cathy with Joe. They were cuddled up to each other in Joe's car. Joe snuggled close to Cathy and held her in a tight embrace. He then kissed her ardently. The movement of their lips and tongues perhaps lashed at her mental image of Cathy.
Sandy, sneaking behind a counter watched this furtively. She suddenly felt a twitch in her stomach.
Sandy could smell of an affair developing between Joe and Cathy. This was one of the reasons she did not like Joe. She thought Joe would take Cathy from her. She was very possessive about Cathy. She could not believe that Cathy would remain her best friend in her make-believe world.
Unable to repress her apprehension, one day, Sandy said"Oh Cathy, what will I do when you get married?
" With whom?", Cathy answered defiantly.
