WHEN LIFE IS A STRANGER

CHARACTERS

RIYA Panicky, Tense, Soft-hearted, Emotional

RAJ Pragmatic, Determined, Persevering, Deliberate

TIME

Moves through a course of six years. It involves both characters in a romantic, poignant and thrilling play.

SCENE 1

( Beside a placid lake with greenery outlining a wooden bench sits Riya, dreary-faced, awaiting Raj. She is wearing a black salwar-kameez with white polka-dots on it. She is covering her neck and head by a dupatta of the same material.) (Enter RAJ)

RAJ

Hi Riya! I am punctual as usual.

RIYA

(retorts angrily)

No, you are ten minutes late!

RAJ

That’s okay dear. I am sorry. In a big city like this people do get trapped in a jam and I was no exception.

RIYA

It’s okay.

RAJ

Why are you so upset? Try to forget the past. Accidents do happen. We will make a new beginning.

RIYA

Accidents don’t happen in everyone’s life. Why did God choose me, I don’t understand.

RAJ

Stop that gibberish. I told you that I love you.

RIYA

That is not enough. I am worried, how you would react when you will see my burnt scars running from the end of my chin till the inside of my tummy, saving a few big parts.

RAJ

(Undeterred and sarcastically)

No, I will dump you into a jungle.

RIYA

Try to understand, please. It will take a long time to heal those scars.

RAJ

I can wait for you ages, Mam!

( Riya stares at him, astonished.

SCENE 2

(Riya and Raj are sitting on the same bench and twilight gradually sets in.)

RAJ

I want to show you something. (He shows the pictures of Riya saved in his mobile in a separate folder marked as “ My Love”.)
