Chapter 1
Crack. Scarlett froze. "Who's there?" She half-whispered-half-yelled. Was that a shadow that moved? She decided it was just her imagination and opened her backpack.
She grabbed a can of red spray paint, five candles, and matches. She wondered if this was a good idea but quickly shoved that thought out of her mind.
She thought about the threat he gave her earlier at school and how he was probably watching her. Just as she was about to close her backpack, she caught her reflection on the mirror keychain.
She was raven-haired, with big, blue eyes: the same blue as the electric blue she had seen at the store in the hair-dye section. She had full lips (or so she thought) and, luckily, a cute little button nose. Her skin (which was a light tan) was now pale - as white as a sheet.
Scarlett blinked back into reality and zipped her backpack shut, moving it by the bush.
She turned around and walked into the clearing. Leaning down, she walked in a giant circle, spraying the paint on the ground as she went. When she finished, she drew a star in the middle. Then, she grabbed the candles and put one on each outer point of the star. Using the matches, she lit the candles. As she stepped back, she felt that something was missing. She realized what it was and went to grab six flowers.
Luckily, there were a couple of rose bushes close to the clearing. She accidentally pricked herself on a thorn while trying to get a rose, but she ignored it. She then placed five roses between the candles, aligning with the circle. She laid the last rose in the middle of the circle/star.
