Preface

In this play, Babatunde Ogungbeje criticizes the persecution of children and women accused of witchcraft. In Africa, women, children, the elderly, the poor and those suffering from various forms of disabilities are mostly falsely accused of witchcraft because of their vulnerabilities. They are either stoned, beaten, banished or killed.

The play opens with Ore, a secondary school leaver whose dream to live a better life outside her community in Ilaje was almost dashed after her mother was accused of witchcraft. The community’s chief priest was able to convince her family that Ore’s mother had initiated her into witchcraft. In a community where witches are stoned and taken to Ayelala shrine to die, it is only wise for them to banish Ore’s mother and send her away to live with the priest for deliverance.

Thepriest’smotivewasrevealedafterAsonjaand Omobowale,Ore’schildhoodfriends, ledthepolice to his house where they found several girls who wereabducted, rapedandforcedtoliveinhishouse against theirwill.

Thisdramaisnotonlycaptivating, itvividlydepicts love, human deceit, ignorance, cruelty, distrust, betrayalandtheothersideofAfricanculture.

Babatunde Ogungbeje clearly makes a point that some of these accused people suffer from mental illness and can be helped in rehabilitation homes or psychiatric hospitals instead of being attacked, harassed, intimidated and killed. An attack on fellow humans in this position is an abuse of human rights as stated in the Nigerian Declaration of Human Responsibilities, and whoever is found wanting should face the wrath of the law.
