Foreword

For the past 35 years, I have met most of the top scroll saw designers in the country. Many have become good friends. Years ago, I came across around a dozen fantastic scroll saw puzzle patterns. I was so impressed that I made most of the puzzles and gave them to my grandkids. While I did not know the designer’s name at the time, I remember thinking that he should write a book. When I received a draft of this book for review, I immediately recognized the design work as the same I had loved years ago.

There are many good scroll saw designers out there, but Jaeheon’s work stands out as truly amazing. His designs are unique and will attract a lot of attention wherever they’re displayed.

This book will make you smile.

—John A. Nelson,

Pattern designer and bestselling author of Scroll Saw Workbook

About the Test Cutter

Rolf Beuttenmuller started scrolling in 2004 after his wife, June, bought him a scroll saw for his birthday. He joined a local club and enjoys new and challenging projects. His motto is, “I don’t know that I can’t, therefore I can.” Rolf retired from Brookhaven National Lab after 34 years of designing and building special devices for high energy and photon science research. He lives in Bellport, N.Y.

Introduction

I try to express the organic playfulness of animals in my woodworking puzzles. For example, I use the free-flowing lines found in nature more often than perfectly round circles and squares with straight, equal sides. Curved and angled lines not only look more natural; they also are more eye-catching.

When creating your own scroll saw puzzles from the designs in this book, details like the mouths, faces, and tails do not have to be identical to the pattern. You can modify their shapes and sizes to your liking, working little by little until you achieve the desired result. I’d love for you to add your own personal touches to these puzzles. Soon you’ll have your own favorites; mine is the Chilly Polar Bears here!

I HAVE A FEW MORE TIPS TO SHARE BEFORE YOU GET STARTED:

• If you are using a sturdy hardwood for a puzzle, try making the animals’ tails and horns (if any) a little longer.
