About the Author

Hi there! I’m Stacy, the artist and owner of Knotty By Nature and author of Knotting Natural Bags and Belts. I’m so thrilled to be able to bring you Adorable Macramé, my second book. My knotty journey with macramé fiber art began when I was planning my “Camp Boho” themed wedding with my nowhusband. It was then that I dreamed of creating a macramé backdrop that would be hung from a wooden teepee arbor as I married the man of my dreams. I envisioned modern macramé table runners to dress up our farm tables during our reception as our loved ones gathered for dinner. Lastly, a small keepsake for our guests who helped us “tie the knot” would be macramé keychains for them to take home. All of this sounded perfect in my mind; however, at the time we were wedding planning, I didn't know how to macramé, let alone tie a single knot.

While on our honeymoon, I mentioned to my husband that I was still interested in learning how to macramé, even if the designs could no longer be used for our wedding. I had this strong desire to learn the art form and a short while after we returned home, I picked up a few supplies from a local arts and crafts store and learned a few basic knots. From there, I was hooked. Macramé soon became a creative outlet for me and what began as a hobby transformed into a knotty small business. I remember the exact moment when I decided to take that leap of faith in becoming a small business owner. It was post-spin class, and my sister was driving us to grab some lunch when she suggested that I create an Instagram to showcase my designs. I immediately laughed at the idea, thinking that no one would be interested in seeing my art flood their Instagram feed.

After a few words of encouragement, I decided what’s the worst that could happen? I could very well just delete my Instagram if it didn’t take off. So, there we sat, brainstorming business name ideas while listening to hip hop music in the background. A few ideas were tossed around until I said under my breath, “Knotty By Nature,” and that was the exact moment that sparked it all. I combined my passion for macramé fiber art, my love for nature and hip-hop music, and a witty pun as the business name: it was perfect. Not long after I created my Instagram account, I launched my Etsy shop and began selling my handmade macramé designs. Fast forward five years later, I’m even more passionate about macramé than I was when I first started. I enjoy creating knotty designs that reflect the different stages in my life. From starting out creating macramé designs for weddings, such as backdrops, veils, bouquets, and boutonniere wraps, my art has since transformed into creating knotty designs for nursery rooms.

I love being able to share my passion for macramé with my knotty community through teaching workshops. It’s an incredibly rewarding feeling to be able to share my knowledge, skill, and tips and tricks that I’ve learned along the way, as I guide others in creating their very own knotty design. The knotty possibilities with macramé are endless and I’m excited to continue to grow as an artist.

I would love to have you be a part of my knotty journey! You can find me on Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, and YouTube (@knotty_by_nature) or my website, https://www.knottybynaturemacramedesigns.com/

Introduction

Welcome to the knotty world of adorable macramé! The patterns in this book focus on smaller-scale designs, ranging from colorful macramé rainbows to lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! Each project is broken down into step- by-step instructions, which include helpful knotty tips and techniques along the way. Over the course of your journey, you will begin to establish your own personal knotty style. Lean into what works best for you. The great thing about this art form as opposed to others is that it’s very forgiving. If you don't like how a certain knot looks in your pattern, you have the freedom to untie it and try again. Just make sure you don't cut the cord off before untying it. That would be a knotty nightmare!

If you’re brand new to macramé, I recommend taking the time to practice the knots outlined in the knot guide section to familiarize yourself with the basic knots. Being that no two macramé cords are exactly alike, it’s helpful to try out cords of various diameters and from different suppliers to figure out what you enjoy getting knotty with! Through repetition and practice, you will discover the tension you prefer for your knots. Take your time and try not to rush your projects. If you allow it to be, macramé has a beautiful way of being therapeutic. I love unwinding with a macramé project, turning on some music, clearing my thoughts, and getting knotty. If you find yourself becoming frustrated with a knot or pattern, take a moment to pause and resume your knotty project later.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I loved writing it. Without further ado, let’s get knotty!

Tools and Materials

Before you get started, here is a list of all the supplies that were used to create the projects in this book.

Throughout your journey with macramé, you will notice the quality of your supplies can make a huge difference in your creative process. I know the feeling all too well, how discouraging it can be to work on a project and suddenly want to give up because the quality of the supplies wasn’t so great. For example, a pair of dull scissors: with a fiber art like macramé, dull scissors are a nightmare! Take the time to experiment and try out different types of supplies, specifically good-quality supplies. This will allow your creativity and productivity to shine!

Knotty Workstation Setup Options

Corkboard: This surface can be easily found at any craft store. With pushpins, you can secure your work to the corkboard to prevent it from moving around.

S-hooks: S-hooks are available in a variety of sizes. If you’re planning to use them paired with a garment rack as your workstation, make sure the dimensions of the S-hooks will fit around the top rod of your garment rack.

Garment Rack: Paired with S-hooks, a garment rack can be used to hang your design from as you’re working. I prefer to use a garment rack that’s adjustable in height and has wheels at the bottom to allow for better storage when not in use. The great thing about garment racks is that when you’re not creating knotty projects, you can use it as a normal garment rack!

Pushpins: Pushpins, T-pins, or even thumbtacks can be used to secure your work to a corkboard.
