Early Life And Education

Bill Maher, also known as William Maher (Birth Name), is an American comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, and television host. He is popularly known for the HBO political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher (2003–present) and the similar late-night show called Politically Incorrect (1993–2002), which originally aired on Comedy Central before moving to ABC.

Maher was born on January 20, 1956, in New York City. His father, William Aloysius Maher Jr., worked as a network news editor and radio announcer, while his mother, Julie Maher (née Berman), was a nurse. Raised in his Irish-American father's Roman Catholic faith, Maher was unaware until his early teens that his mother, whose family was from Hungary, was Jewish. This familial religious background influenced Maher's upbringing significantly. When Maher was thirteen, his father stopped taking him and his sister to Catholic Mass due to a disagreement with the Catholic Church's doctrine on birth control.

Maher grew up in River Vale, New Jersey, and completed his high school education at Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, graduating in 1974. He then pursued higher education at Cornell University, where he double-majored in English and history, graduating in 1978. Reflecting on his college years, Maher has noted that selling marijuana helped him financially, allowing him to support himself through college and eventually launch his career in comedy.

Early Career

Maher began his career in comedy and acting, gaining his first significant exposure as the host of the New York City comedy club Catch a Rising Star in 1979. His television career took off in 1982, when he started making appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Maher made several television appearances on shows such as Sara (1985), Max Headroom (1987), Murder, She Wrote (1989, 1990), and Charlie Hoover (1991).

Maher made his feature film debut in D.C. Cab (1983) and went on to act in Ratboy (1986), House II: The Second Story (1987), Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (1988), and Pizza Man (1991). He also hosted the CBS talk show Midnight Hour in 1990.

Television Career
