CHAPTER 1

Early Life

Serj Tankian is an Armenian-American musician and songwriter, renowned for his role as the lead vocalist, keyboardist, rhythm guitarist, and primary lyricist of the band System of a Down, which was formed in 1994.

Tankian was born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon. He has ancestral roots tracing back to the cities of Dörtyol, Kayseri, Tokat, and Urfa, located in modern-day Turkey. His four grandparents were survivors of the Armenian genocide. When he was seven years old, Tankian moved to the United States with his parents, eventually settling in Los Angeles.

During his youth, Tankian attended the bilingual Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School. This school was also attended by his future System of a Down bandmates, Daron Malakian and Shavo Odadjian. Tankian pursued higher education at California State University, Northridge, where he graduated with a degree in marketing in 1989. It was during his sophomore year that he began to explore music, learning to play the keyboard and writing songs.

After completing his degree, Tankian briefly worked with his uncle, a jeweler, and even considered law school, signing up for the LSAT. However, after attending just one class, he realized his disinterest and never returned. He also had a stint as the CEO of a software company he founded during the MS-DOS era, which was successful in creating software for jewelers. He sold this company shortly before receiving his first paycheck from System of a Down.
