Chapter 1

EARLY LIFE

Thomas William Selleck was born on January 29, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan. His mother, Martha Selleck, was a homemaker, and his father, Robert Dean Selleck, worked as an executive and was involved in real estate investments. Tom was one of four children; he had an older brother named Robert, a younger sister named Martha, and a younger brother named Daniel.

Tom Selleck's ancestry is predominantly English, with some German roots as well. On his father's side, he traces his lineage directly back to English colonist David Selleck, who emigrated from Somerset, England, to Massachusetts in 1633. This heritage places Tom in the 11th generation of his family born in North America.

In 1948, when Tom was just three years old, his family relocated from Detroit to Sherman Oaks, California. This move would eventually pave the way for his future career in acting and entertainment.

Chapter 2

EDUCATION

Tom Selleck graduated from Grant High School in 1962. Following high school, he enrolled at Los Angeles Valley College, choosing to live at home to save money. Standing at an impressive 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m), Selleck transferred to the University of Southern California (USC) during his junior year to join the USC Trojans men's basketball team. Additionally, he played as a pitcher and designated hitter for the USC baseball team.

At USC, Selleck became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Trojan Knights. Initially majoring in Business Administration, his path took a significant turn when a drama coach recommended that he explore acting. Taking this advice to heart, Selleck dropped out of USC during his senior year to pursue an acting career. He subsequently honed his craft by studying acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse under the guidance of Milton Katselas.
