Chapter 1

EARLY YEARS

Bill Walton was born on November 5, 1952. He grew up in La Mesa, California, alongside his siblings Bruce, Cathy, and Andy. Their family home, situated on a hillside along Colorado Avenue, overlooked the serene beauty of Lake Murray.

Bill's father, Ted Walton, Jr., worked as both a music teacher and a social worker, while his mother, Gloria Anne, pursued her passion as a librarian. The Walton household buzzed with discussions on art, literature, politics, and music, reflecting the diverse interests of his parents.

Despite their non-sporting inclinations, Bill found himself drawn to sports, inspired by his older brother Bruce's athletic pursuits. During their formative years in junior high and high school, their father fostered familial bonds through the creation of an informal family band. Bruce played the trombone, Bill mastered the baritone horn, Andy showcased his talent on the saxophone, and Cathy showcased her rhythmic skills on the drums, flute, or tuba.

Bill's journey into organized basketball commenced under the guidance of Frank "Rocky" Graciano, who coached at Walton's Catholic elementary school. Graciano's coaching style prioritized the joy of teamwork, instilling a sense of camaraderie and fun within the sport. Despite facing personal challenges such as a stutter and shyness, basketball provided Bill with a safe haven for self-expression and growth.

Chapter 2

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER

Bill Walton attended Helix High School in La Mesa, California, where he played basketball alongside his older brother, Bruce Walton. Bruce, who stood at 6 feet 6 inches and weighed 250 pounds, was a standout football player. Their brotherly bond was evident on the basketball court, as Bruce would protect Bill from physical play during games. Bill fondly recalled, "When those opposing teams would try to get physical with me, Bruce would do whatever it took to protect me." Bruce eventually went on to play for the Dallas Cowboys, making the Walton brothers the only siblings in history to have played in both a Super Bowl and an NBA championship.

"When they would begin to rough up Bill, I would look at coach and he would give me a nod." recalled Bruce. "Yes," said Gloria Walton, "then when the referee wasn't looking, Bruce would give the player an elbow and let him know that the skinny guy was his kid brother."

Bill Walton's struggles with injury began at Helix High School. He suffered multiple injuries, including a broken ankle, leg, and several bones in his feet, and he also had knee surgery. Before his sophomore season, Walton underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, which led him to play most of his sophomore year on the junior varsity team. Coach Gordon Nash promoted him to the varsity team towards the end of the season, but Walton only played in six games and did not start any of them.
