Introduction
The American Kennel Club started the Canine Good Citizen program in 1989, and the program has grown quickly in popularity, even influencing dog organizations in other countries to develop their own versions of the program. Dog owners all over the world have seen the value of recognizing dogs who are trained to behave properly at home and in their communities.
Ideally, every dog should be trained to become a Canine Good Citizen. The more dogs who are good citizens, the better the chances dog owners have of counteracting the growing antidog sentiment in many communities. Irresponsible dog ownership has been the cause for this sentiment, so only responsible pet ownership can reverse it.
When you and your dog earn a Canine Good Citizen certificate, you accomplish more than millions of other dog owners. Are you ready for the challenge?
What You Can Do In A Day
We truly want Canine Good Citizen Test In A Day For Dummies to be a useful tool for you. And we don’t want dog training to feel like a chore that you have to slog through step by step. You can spend an entire day working with your dog, but that’s probably going to be too intense for both of you. So we’ve structured this book in such a way that you can jump in and out of the text as necessary; you can spend a few minutes every day working on a new command and a bit more time on the weekends building on lessons learned during the week. You may be able to read this book in just a few hours, but expect to spend many hours with your dog practicing the behaviors we write about.
We start by explaining the basic commands that every dog should know: Sit, Stay, and Down. Then we move on to two common and essential dog activities: going for a walk and coming when called. Finally, we focus on refining these skills so your dog can pass the Canine Good Citizen test with flying colors and become a well-behaved representative of his species. You can read through the book once and take away just what you need, or you can return to it again and again as your dog advances in his knowledge and skills. How you use this book is up to you!
Conventions Used in This Book
We use two specific conventions throughout the text to make everything consistent:
When referring to a specific dog training command or signal, we capitalize it. For example, we may tell you to use the Come command. When we tell you to give a certain command to your dog, we capitalize it and put it in quotation marks. When referring to a position, we capitalize the term. For example, we may tell you to put your dog into the Sit position.
No matter what your dog’s name (or gender) is, in this book we refer to your dog as Buddy. And isn’t he your best bud?
Foolish Assumptions
We assume that you picked up this book because you want to have your dog certified as a Canine Good Citizen by the American Kennel Club. If your dog is a young pup, he may not be old enough to become a Canine Good Citizen yet, but he can get a jump on his peers (figuratively, not literally!) by completing the AKC’s S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. We give you basic information about that program in Chapter 1.
The Canine Good Citizen test encourages the development of a well-trained and well-behaved dog. In that vein, we also assume:
You want your dog to be well behaved — for his sake as well as yours.
You’re self-motivated and ready to make training a priority.
You’re looking for an inexpensive guide that gives you the freedom to teach your dog what and when you want.
You know little about training a dog, or you have tried it on your own with limited success.
Icons Used in This Book
To help you navigate your way through the text, we’ve included some highlights and hints to make training your dog easier. This key information is marked with little pictures (or icons) in the margins. Here’s what the icons tell you:
This icon draws your attention to ways to save time, energy, and your sanity.
This icon raises a red flag; your safety or your dog’s may be at risk. It also tells you about the don’ts of dog training. Proceed at your own risk!
This icon directs you to information that’s important to remember — key points that you want to focus on.
Dogs learn best in short practice sessions, and this icon highlights a basic skill that you can practice a couple of times in a few minutes. Of course, you’ll ultimately want to spend more than five minutes on all the exercises in this book.
When you see this icon, head to this book’s companion website at www.dummies.com/inaday/caninegoodcitizen test. Online, you’ll find more-detailed information about topics that we cover in the book.
