Faith in Christ Jesus is the only vehicle that conveys a man from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of Light; for God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. Jesus Christ authored faith in the writings and in the activities of the elders of old and finished faith by His death and resurrection from the dead.

[1] Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. [2] For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. Hebrews 11:1-2 NKJV
Faith is the Greek word “pistis” which is a reliance upon Christ Jesus for salvation. Faith in other word is a person, the person of Jesus Christ whom the elders of old hoped for. Faith in other words is evidence of things not seen, the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ is this evidence of things that was not seen by the elders of old, yet they obtained good testimony in hope of it.
These elders, beginning at Moses and all the prophets all hoped and placed their reliance upon Jesus Christ for their salvation. So, they hoped in Him whom they did not see and by their hope, they obtained credible testimony that qualified them for salvation.
Right now, we are not in hope because Christ has been born, Christ has died and Christ has risen so we live in the reality of that substance the elders hoped for and we have seen the evidence of things that they wished to see, which is Christ in you.
Christ in you is the hope of salvation, the elders of old hoped for Christ to tabernacle in them but they couldn't archive that. The best they archived was God in a temple made with hands but that is not God's dwelling place, so they hoped for a day that God will live and walk in them and that is the day we are in today.
Abraham was reckoned as Father of faith because of how he esteemed Christ in his actions. These elders of old demonstrated their faith by their works and by their works, salvation was credited into their account but they couldn't access that salvation until Jesus Christ whom is the guarantor and the guarantee of salvation showed up.
[1] Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. Genesis 12:1 NKJV
This is the Genesis of salvation. Salvation begins with a call out, God made a call to Abraham and in extension to the whole world to come out of darkness into His marvelous light. Salvation is a call to be in Christ, for if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.
[4] So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Genesis 12:4 NKJV
Abraham answered God's call and moved out not because he knew where God was taking him but because He esteemed Christ and counted God faithful. So Abraham departed looking for a city whose builder and maker is God because he thought that God is taking him to a mansion better than his father's house but what he did not know was that God was taking him to Christ and by answering God's call, Abraham walked into Christ.
Jesus Christ is that city whose builder and maker is God so when Abraham was searching for that city, He was searching and walking into Christ. By leaving his father's house in search of this city which is Jesus Christ, it was counted for him as salvation.
[4] By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. Hebrews 11:4 NKJV
When Cain and Abel set out to offer sacrifice to God, Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice because he sacrificed the first fruit of his flock (Gen. 4:4) which was counted for him as righteousness because by faith he demonstrated that God will offer Jesus Christ, His first Son as a living sacrifice. Although Abel is dead but his sacrifice is still speaking because what He offered was Jesus Christ by the Spirit.
The difference between Cain and Abel's sacrifices is that Abel knew by faith that without the shedding of blood, there will be no remission of sins (Heb. 9:22-28) so while Cain came with a fruit sacrifice (Gen. 4:3), Abel came with animal sacrifice (Gen. 4:4), and Jesus Christ was that animal he offered which is the evidence of things not seen.
[5] By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Hebrews 11:5 NKJV
Enoch walked with God for 300 years (Gen. 5: 22) and God counted it for him as righteousness. Enoch walked with God to the extent that he was not found among men and it was concluded that God took him. This is indeed a record of faith on how Christ pleased God and God took Him.
The faith of Enoch is the substance of things hoped for which is how Jesus Christ walked the face of the earth doing good for God was with Him and He is no more because God took Him and placed Him on his right hand on high.
[7] By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. Hebrews 11:7 NKJV
The ark of Noah is the substance of things hoped for which is Jesus Christ the ark of our salvation. While Noah was busy building the Ark, he was demonstrating his faith in Jesus Christ. When he finished the Ark and entered with his household, he condemned the world because anyone who is not found to believe in Jesus Christ is condemned already.
By building and entering the Ark, Noah demonstrated that anyone who believes in Jesus Christ has passed from condemnation to life.
[11] By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised. [12] Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore. Hebrews 11:11-12 NKJV
Sarah's conception of a child at her old age is something that happened as a result of her faith in the promise of God. Just as Mary conceived Jesus Christ without meeting any man but by believing the message of the Angel of God, so Sarah's conception is the conception of Jesus Christ which is the substance of things hoped for which is now the evidence of things that she did not see.
[22] By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones. Hebrews 11:22 NKJV
The faith of Joseph is his demonstration that one day, we will come out of bondage of sin and death. Just as the children of Israel were held in bondage in Egypt, we all were under the bondage of sin and death but by faith Joseph spoke about our freedom which can only come through a saviour which is Jesus Christ.
[23] By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command. [24] By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, [25] choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, [26] esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. [27] By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. [28] By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them. [29] By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned. Hebrews 11:23-29 NKJV
Moses was born as a saviour just as Jesus Christ, he was born at a period when all the male child of the Jews was ordered to be killed by the Pharaoh. Jesus Christ on the other hand was born at a time when all the male child in Bethlehem Judah was ordered to be killed by Herod. But by faith, they disregarded the kings command and hid the child because they knew that the child will grow to be the saviour of mankind.
